I've posted this in the Tech forum but got no response so someone here might be able to help! Im doing a college project which involves setting up a website. I dont know much about doing this and Im currently looking a hosting, possibly with Blacknight. Anyways can I use a .IE domain for my site?

You have to have at least a company name registered with the same name as your desired domain name. A little bit harder/more expensive than registering a .com address.

That company-only rule has changed. There are discretionary names and personal names now. However if it's for a college project just get a .com as it's much cheaper.

As an aside, way back in the days of the company only rule, there was a bunch of gamers who wanted to set up a general bulletin board website. They had to change their company name from spinsol to boards for a day in the Companies Registration Office and then registered boards.ie. That's how boards.ie was born.

Thanks for the feedback. Even though its only for a college project its something I could see myself turning into a good website. It would be only aimed at Irish people hence I was preferring a .ie domian. Also the .com of the name I want to use is already taken.

Got this from the Tech forum:
OP, you can register a .ie privately (I've got three of them myself), you do have to do a little more paperwork though (it amounts to sending the registrar a photocopy of your passport or driving licence or utility bill or whatever, and a letter saying what the domain will be used for).

The simplest way to do it is to register a business name with the CRO - costs about 20 euro
