I need to know how you disgnose if the turbo on a BMW (320d) is damaged or not working. I 've heard that the car turbo makes a whistling noise if its gone. If it is gone, is it a big problem to fix, or repair? thanks.

Not really for the tech forum, but turbos whistle when they're working too. Honestly, if a Turbo's gone, you'll know all about it. Repair prices vary from if you use a second hand turbo and an independent mechanic kicking off around 5-700 Euro, right up to 2000+ Euro for main dealers (As shown in our recent Volvo main dealer turbo replacement thread).

Either way, if you don't know about cars, ask someone who does - a mechanic, or a friend of the family.

What is the problem you are having?

If you remove the intake pipeing to access the turbo, you can feel the turbo shaft for play.

Well it's a friends car and he cant afford to bring it to a garage so I suggested we check it out ourselves. A mechanic told him that the turbo MIGHT be going on it, but he didn't know! There might be no problem at all. I'll do what you mentioned above, check for play on the shaft. Methinks he'll have to bring it to someone with the know how, can you recommend anyone?

They should be a tiny bit of play in it but nothing big. also look at the fan blades. If they are broke off well then you know...

PCV Valve can also make a whistling, or goose like whine when blocked. or requires replacing.
