I have a Western Digital passport which I've used for years and it's never let me down. Although what has let me down is my brain as I haven't been able to find it this last week... it's quite small and I have no idea where I put it!

If you're using Pixmania don't forget to use Fatcheese. Not sure what the cashback rate is but you could save a bit.

I have the same one, got it for €75 from komplett about 14 months ago and never had any issues with it so can recommend it.

Good price but the reports I've read on Pixmania are pretty horrendous. Any other supplier and I'd prolly be all over this.

+ €12.99 shipping which brings it over the Amazon price (about €56 shipped).

There's no way I'd buy from Pixmania over Amazon when the price is even close.

I can just recommend the WD Passport no probs at all and by all other reports WD seems to have good stuff.

You do, just select Free Delivery. (Anything over £25 I think).

I was not aware amazon deliver free over 25 quid! Think I will purchase the hard drive off them now! Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,120 ✭✭✭shrapnel222

bought 2 of these last week from pixmania ( at that price). paid for ups, basically 16 euros instead of 12 for shipping (worthwhile when buying more than 1 item as the price doesn't change). it was delivered the next day.

Does anyone know what disk is actually inside? Is it a standard 3.5" sata?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,507 ✭✭✭dowtchaboy

I got one of these early on the summer - from Amazon.
Seems speedy enough (especially compared to the USB-powered ones) and is dead quiet and smooth.
As it's the Elements edition (rather than the My Databook type) it does not have any backup or diagnostic software) but who cares? That stuff is easy enough to find out there.
The mains adapter is neat enough - like a phone power plug rather than a '"brick" on a lead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,345 ✭✭✭jamescd

Purchased one of these from amazon a while back. Pretty happy with it so far :)

On a side note, I ordered something else off amazon and it was dispatched on the 3rd. Estimated delivery date is the 7th which was 3 days ago. I seem to remember that it was an independent courier and not An Post that made the delivery the last time I ordered off them. I don't know if there has been attempted delivery or not, how do I go about finding out where my package is ? Do they hand the package over to the local sorting office if you missed the delivery attempt ?

e-mail / call amazon, their CS is usually very helpful in situations like this.

Good price for a 1Tb but its a long time since they were 129.
Think I got this from Komplett more than a year ago for 109.

There is an authorised seller on Adverts doing 2Gb for 90.

A desktop that isnt moved is probably going to last much longer than 2.5 inch portable that is going to be bumped, dropped or lost.

I have it from a disaster recovery specialist that failure rates are increasing as prices fall and sizes increase.
A friends fairly new WD passport was unrecoverable after a catastrophic failure - so dont rely on them if your data isnt backed up elsewhere.

Even if it's an authorised seller that seems a little dear.

Has anybody been able to complete the sale ?
It keeps giving me an error when I goto payment?

Can anyone tell me what disk is actually inside the enclosure? Is it a sata 3.5?

better off with one of the passport hard drives that wd do (doesnt require extra plug ie usb powered). and if you plan to have a lot of stuff on it expect to wait a long time for the ps3 to load all the files on the hd. i have a 500gb one with about 600 movies and it takes the ps3 about 5-10 min to recognise all the movies on it

I've got to the point of not trusting the USB-powered hard drives.
I've had a 120G, 250G and a 300G and they have all eventually failed. 2 had dodgy sectors on the disk itself (Seagate was one I think), and 2 had the mini-USB connector fail or go unreliable. That's a problem with portable drives - they get a lot of knocks, they end up swinging from the connector, usually the connector is soldered directly to the printed circuit board and eventually the connections to the board break. I've "recovered" one (a WD) by buying a housing/adapter from eBay - but I don't trust it for long-term storage - I use it for moving stuff between systems (or when "browsing" video-mad friend's system :) )
I suppose for non-critical applications like recording TV programmes they'd be OK.
My WD was a Passport - nice enough drive but I feel safer with the mains-powered Essentials.

Regarding delivery and Pixmania they are fine, never had an issue with them. They typically use An Post or GLS

Delivery isn't the main issue, apart from the fact that it's €12.99. Try a google search for the multiplicity of nightmare experiences people have had with them.

Stupid question but can you get a portable hard drive with media player or portable media player with say 1TB storage?? Looking to store regular files, music, movies etc, to bring it travelling and to be able to plug it directly into any tv or laptop to play movies. What movie files are most common so I can make sure it plays those and what price are we talking? Any recommendations?
    Cheers!!

The Western Digital Live Hub has 1TB hard drive on it and is highly recommended. Was going to get one till I realised my monitor is big enough to play my films in very good quality :D. It plays most video formats and music formats aswell.

The WD Live Hub isn't Portable.. is it?

I think he means something like this,

    http://www.expansys.ie/seagate-freeagent-goflex-portable-1tb-hard-drive-black-201892/
Extend your content beyond the PC
The GoFlex ultra-portable drive is the heart of the GoFlex Storage System, and by combining it with other GoFlex Storage System products you can enjoy your content on your TV, access files from any PC or Mac computer on your network, from a mobile device or via the Internet while on the go.

Doesn't plug directly into TV i don't think, but yeah, there are portable media players up to 1.5TB AFAIK.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,383 ✭✭✭peckerhead

That's still just a hard drive, it doesn't have a media player built in...

If you want portability, have a look at this (or this if you don't need support for .mkv and other HD formats). It'll also read SD cards, USB pen drives, etc., so very flexible — and cheap. :D But you'll still need a power source.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,429 ✭✭✭dnme

3.5 SATA yeah, well thats what the last WD was when I dissected it.

Cool thanks, will pick up a couple and rip em out so.

i bought one for 60 euro last sale, very good hard drive, quite fast, quiet, doesnt make tons of noise, i've had it about a year now so it's not a 2 week review job ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,429 ✭✭✭dnme

Why? You can get 1tb drives for less on ebay. If you open up an Ext HD you have no warranty. If you buy them as internal you do.

Can you? must have a butchers

Had a google around , but can't find required cable to connect this to a scart input (obviously HDMI to scart cable/connector :) but can't find one !!), would an old x-box/wii to scart cable do the job ?

Great price for WD 1tb elements btw, cheers OP

The PS3 only works with external hard drives that are formatted to FAT32.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 342 ✭✭thomasjad

Plug it into your computer and make sure to copy anything you want off it as formatting erases everything. Then when your ready go to my computer and on your hard drive right click and choose format and then choose fat32. Downside to this is that you wont be able to put files over 4GB on it after.

Use Disk Managenement (Windows HElp -> Disk Management) to parition the drive first. Create 2 partitions and use one for PS3. FAT32 has a format limit of 32GB. Note that your PS3 uses UFS which has no format limit.

I got one of these. The part that converts the HD Sata port to USB failed on it after around 6 months. The HD was ok though. Ended up throwing out the enclosure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 317 ✭✭EyeDeeOne

i got the older model of that, filled it up with all my stuff, it all got deleted, sent it back, got a replacement of that model, and it broke as well
    will not chance that again.

I bought one (2TB) last Friday. Transferred our photos, music, and personal files onto it. Crashed within 3 minutes of finishing. NOTHING will restore it. Won't take it back, as I don't want our personal data viewed by someone else. A piece of junk.

I already have two internal WD 1TB drives and they're fine (8 months old). But Google the reviews for them. They're terrible. pity I didn't do so first.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,000 ✭✭✭fl4pj4ck

my 640GB WD is just over 2 years old now (bought it for Xmas 2008) and it works and looks like new (well, it's a bit dusted)

the two internat 500GB Samsungs however failed in the meantime, switched them to 3x640 WDs in Raid0 and they're working in that config just over a year now without any problems

so in the end it's not the brand that's terrible, more likely you're dealing with a faulty series
