i'm looking to get a Freeview HD+ boc from the UK basically for the purpose of recording shows on RTE/TV3 and would need to have Series Link for it to be worth my while. Is it working now or will we have to wait closer to the official launch campaign?

No series link data like UK Freeview and Freesat (CRID data in DVB-EIT or MHEG stream) on Saorview at present. I don't think anyone on this forum has indicated that they know what RTE/RTENL's plans are in this regard. Windows Media Centre in Windows 7 does a form of series link but this is a software solution. Most recorders will do manual repeating timers, but it's a "wait and see" game until RTE finally decide on whether EPG data will remain as DVB-EIT and/or they provide an MHEG version.

One unresolved issue with Freeview HD STB's is that certain Chinese sourced models seem to get 'indigestion' from RTEs implementation of MHEG5 where Vestel manufactured boxes do not seem to suffer in the same way. The only certified Saorview STBs are manufactured by Vestel as it happens.

MHEG5 is a bit of a moving target right now, I would not expect compatibility right now and of course this would affect series links.

Best advice, wait :)

I do not think Chinese sourced boxes will be upto the required standard before the official launch of Saorview. The requirement for MPEG 4/MHEG 5 is only now begining to come on stream and will not be in full supply until later on in the year. The MPEG 4 standard is of good quality and is coming down in price while availability is going up. MHEG 5 is still in a minority, as it is currently being seen as a uk only requirement. Its adoption by other broadcasters around the world will result in product later this year I would think.

Cheers for the replies, I will hold off the purchase until it's available.

Some cracking bargains in Argos at the moment, had my eye on this Hitachi 500GB box for £112.33

It says on that web page that it's a Freeview+ box rather than a Freeview+ HD box. There's nothing there to indicate it'll work with Saorview.

That looks like a Freeview receiver and not FreeviewHD receiver so it will be useless for Saorview.

Thanks watty - I know how series link can work and is working in the UK. Question is whether RTE RTENL will go down the CRID route. The BBC published a number of papers five years ago about TV-Anytime open specifications for the description of TV and radio programme data. PDF on EBU site here http://www.ebu.ch/trev_295-evain.pdf

Sorry watty - you linked to a single post and I saw 2002 and assumed it was an old post - was Apogee's join date! I opened up the thread and found it was recent!

Obsolete. No good for "Freeview HD" or Saorview. That's why it's cheap.

Cheers yes seemed too good to be true. Will have to wait until the Freeview HD PVR boxes drop in price.

Sorry about digging up an old thread, but it's better than opening up a new one!

I read somewhere that the Series Link on SaorView will be using Nordig 2.2 specification.

I'm not entirely sure what that is to be quote honest. I'm looking at 2 PVR's for Saorview, the 3View, the Humax Fox HDR T2.

Would these work for Series link?

The Humax is edging in front as I have a Humax Freesat PVR and I'm very happy with it. I can see on Nordig.org that "All specifications are based on DVB" and I can see that the Humax has two DVB-T2 tuners.

Can I assume the Humax is up to the job?

I have the Humax hdr-fox d2. I am living in Northern Ireland 5 miles from the Donegal border and I am receiving Freeview (with serieslink) and through second ariel pointing at transmitter in Donegal (Moville perhaps) am able to receive Saorview chanels.

As earlier posts say there is no series link with Saorview. Hopefully when it is available it will work on the Humax Hdr-fox.

At present the Saorview epg tv guide is only for 6 days in advance unlike the 8 days on Freeview plus. You can search programmes by keyword on Saorview but on the 8 day Freeview+ EPG you can search for programmes by keyword or genre (film, educational, sport etc.). Series link works for freeview+.

The drive is 500 GB but programes can be downloaded or uploaded easily from an external hard drive which can be obtained for eg 1TB freeagent goflex (Maplin) @ STG£59.99

There is also an ethernet port and extra usb at the back for a usb wireless dongle allowing access to BBC iplayer ( likeky only valid for U.K. i.p.addresses only). I am going to try the Edimax ew7711 uan dongle (£10.99 AMAZON) with high gain ariel to link to my broadband network.

The Humax HDR-Fox T2 also has a single slot for HD connection and comes with a HD lead. I dont have a HD TV so I havent tried it out yet but some RTE2 content is in HD (e.g. sport / rugby 6 nations matches).

So far box is extremely stable and no problems. Remote control not as user friendly as other DVR boxes or SKY+ remote though.

Note although the Humax HDR-Fox T2 decodesand records Sarview programmes it is not "Saorview Approved".

I am a happy Humax customer and have not in the TV trade.

hope this will be of help.

Let me know how this works out, I'm sure when all the dust settles RTE may think about launching the RTE Player at some stage.

Would also come in very handy for Wireless transferring File Back and forth or perhaps streaming from Laptop to Box to TV.

So with the launch today is series link working now and if so will it work with the Humax Freeview boxes or will it need to be a Saorview box?

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,711 ✭✭✭fat-tony

No sign of any additional information in the EPG stream (such as CRIDs (Content Reference Identifiers)) which would be needed to support a Series Link facility. Maybe an email to Saorview might elicit the information as to when they plan to provide this data?

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,499 ✭✭✭✭Alun

Seems to be working in Windows Media Centre in any case. I can set a series link recording for, say Eastenders, and it picks up all the episodes for the next week no problem.

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,568 ✭✭✭Gerry Wicklow

Media centre also allows you watch for keywords so that you can record, say,
"Time Team" or "Time Team Special" or whatever variations of same

This has nothing to do with linked programme information (CRID) in the DVB stream provided by the broadcaster. WMC is a PC application using either externally supplied metadata or is making assumptions based on programme name. It's of no relevance to embedded systems used in STBs. Info on TV-Anytime can be found on the ETSI website http://www.etsi.org/WebSite/Technologies/TVAnytime.aspx.

Same as reply to Alun. WMC is a PC application and can do anything with the supplied data. Microsoft downloads proprietary EPG data to WMC which is paid for as part of the Windows 7 licence.

I know that, but I have mine set up to use the broadcast EPG, not the MS supplied one. It could still be doing series link purely based on program name strings I suppose, regardless of the EPG used.

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,711 ✭✭✭fat-tony

I know you know;) It's just that folks buying, or intending to buy, Freeview HD PVRs keep asking about Series Link and the only chance they have of those boxes working is if RTENL implement standardised metadata in the DVB stream - it may cause confusion if owners of WMC or DVBviewer or other PC/Linux applications (I include myself in that category) claim that series link is already available. Media centres are very much a niche market. The vast majority of people will buy or want to buy dedicated PVRs. I do wish that RTENL would indicate a timetable for when they will start implementing CRID data in the EPG stream!

According to RTE news Tuesday, 15 March 2011……

http://www.rte.ie/news/money/general/free-digital-tv-service-to-launch-in-ireland.html

“Saorview will also allow viewers of terrestrial TV to record, live pause and series link their favourite shows for the first time.”

Supposedly Saorview is now live yet no series link.

What’s going on?

Why not pop an email to Saorview? The Series Link facility is in the specification documents but it has not been implemented in the EPG data yet. There have been minor changes to the EPG last week which seem to have affected Edision boxes. I assume that, in time, they will add in the Series Link facility.

I thought that SaorView officially launched the final test phase last week and that it will be finally, "fully" live in (or around) September? (When Mux2 is on, and RTÉ is able to broadcast 40% of it's content in Native HD)?
Maybe Series Link will be part of that?

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 71 ✭✭Donegal_TDI

I have already sent 2 very mannerly e-mails to Saorview in recent times with no reply to date.
They have given the public the view that the service is up and running, done deal, finished and complete, which it is not until series link is implemented.

The Saorview platform was fully launched on Saturday 28th last, it's now an operational service.

It's primary purpose is to replace the 4 channel analogue network.

Other features and HD content will appear over time.

I am dying to know this too, it seems an easy idea that is being done everywhere else and saorview should have it implemented in these sky+ times

Post #25 refers. Still no sign of Series Link info in the EPG data. It's in the spec. but no sign of it yet;)

Has any one else noticed that if they click the information button on a program on the Saorview EPG a brief synopsis of the program pops up. Yet when the program is saved and you click the same button you get nothing.

On Freeview recordings this information is available on the Feeview EPG and also when the program is saved to hard drive.

The saorview signal has stream 0.0 video, 0.1audio stereo, 0.2 audio mono and text (program info and channel guide info).

When I looked at some saved file before in the 0.2 stream there was program information not only on the program but on other programs which were on other channels at the same time of that recording.

And so far on the Humax the Saorview have no series CRID data.

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 71 ✭✭Donegal_TDI

I agree, and can confirm with, all of the above, also on Humax(HDR FoxT2).
Performance is good, quality good, recording is reliable,
but no series link.
Have we been sold a pup in Saorview?
They told us this would be available at launch.
I even sent RTE an e-mail requesting clarification.
They never replied.
Even Panasonic replied about the tuning issues I had with the TXL37G15,
with a follow up requesting serial number of TV.
RTE's PR machine sucks!

With reference to my post number 32. I do realise this is in the thread about Saorview and series links and do understand that serieslink just may be something that is 'in the pipeline'.

However I wanted to know if it was only on my box (humax hdr t2) that the program information synopsis was not being saved or was that the case for other saorview recorders.

When I click on the 'i' or information button on a program highlighted on the guide the program synopsis and information appears. However if I record or save this programme to the hard drive and then click on the 'i' /info button only the program name appears.

What if the series link information is like the program synopsis then the set top boxes may not be recognising it.

I also found this on saorview forums on other sites
it appears that RTE are not observing the Nordig 2.0 standard as they should be.
It seems that they are using "ENG" as the language descriptor rather than "eng".
This has given risae to a similar problem on set-top boxes also
I wonder would this be a problem as the humax box is linux based and linux commands are case sensitive for example
cd /media/'My Video'
is completly different to
cd /media/'My video'

The first line will change the directory to the one that stores the recorded programs.
The second will come up with an error as there is no "My video" subdirectory in the media directory only a "My Video" directory.

Can any one make sense of this.

Why is the "?" so prominent in the Saorview Recording data. Could it be invalid characters in the program synopsis?
Is this why the program synopsis on live shows is visible and a full paragraph yet when the same show is saved to hard disk there is NO synopsis?

Can any one make sense of this data from 2 shows recorded approximately the same time one from freeview and one from saorview. Why are there so many differences.

Do you notice the '?' symbol appearing quite often in the Saorview raw data?

I have just clicked to record a program on RTE junior and for the first time on Saorview have been given the option 'Record the whole series'

Can any one make sense of this.

Why is the "?" so prominent in the Saorview Recording data. Could it be invalid characters in the program synopsis?Do you notice the '?' symbol appearing quite often in the Saorview raw data?

é - Character set for Service Providers name not defined in whatever software you are using when reading the mux data (Hence other Mux data being captured to answer your other question - you are recording as a Transport Stream ?).

EDIT just read that you are using a Humax HDR T2. The fada characters are not defined in the firmware. BTW Saorview has no DRM in Saorview spec. Freeview HD does.

All ready to go according to the people from Saorview but won't become operational until the manufacturers launch approved receivers

Regarding broadcasting of series link I posed the qn of when. They said it is fully tested and can be turned on anytime they want.

They said they are deliberatelly waiting for a dual terrestrial tuner approved for Saorview to come out.

The reason they said why is not really technical. They said if they broadcast it today, people with single tuner PVR's will be comparing it to Sky+HD with live pause, dual tuner etc and be dissapointed. Another even more worrying problem would be if non Saorview dual tuners started selling in droves then people would be using them on Saorview.

What they want is a proper Saorview approved dual tuner to be launched in the future, on the same time as series link, so that people can get the full approved device. It is not expected this will happen any time soon, but this is up to manufacturers rather than RTENL.

They want the Saorview brand to be protected from non appoved dodgy gear and everyone using equipment which has every feature, unlike the old freeview launch in the UK where some boxes sold were not 100% compatable and people blamed freeview rather than the device manufacturers.
