Other drivers?

Do you think that the type of car you drive affects how other drivers react and behave around you? Or do you behave differently around different types of cars?
I have often noticed on a Sunday morning outside mass in mountrath if I stop to let a few people out on to the road in my own car (pic in my sig) very few will acknowledge me letting them off but if I am driving my mams micra most will wave when i do:rolleyes:
Also notice i get tailgated a lot more in my own car mostly by diesel mondeos and A4's and the likes. They then show their ''power'' by overtaking me to then pull in to go at the same speed that I was going at:confused:

I hate being behind 7 seater's myself. I have had a couple of bad experiences with these. On more than one occasion I have been behind one on a straight road to have them jamm on the brakes and/or pull in (usually not indicating or doing it at the very last second) probably to do with kids in the back... I stay well back for them now:D

The black alloys on your car makes people think that you're council estate vermin, and that makes them want for you to be dead.

Sorry, but it's **** out there.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 184 ✭✭daithi2011

Go on. Show your car to those of us who have sigs disabled.
You know you want to. After reading about the black alloys though in another post here, let me guess, its some sort of hot hatch knacker mobile.

I find myself that most drivers think that all other drivers are worse than they are at driving.

Also find that most people that think they have a cool car, seem to think that it changes other people attitudes on the roads to them. Like they are jealous of their road machine. Nobody really gives a shi1te what car the one in front of or behind them is.

    Edit:
OK, enabled sigs because I got curious.
Holy Jaysus. What is that thing. No wonder they they act differently. Probably busy trying not to laugh i'd say.

I've found driving the mothers TT that people are constantly looking for a race, namely the remapped 130bhp Passat brigade.

It definitely differs how others react to you depending on the car you're driving!

Had an aussie car (Ford Falcon XR6 Turbo) here on loan from the UK, everyone behaved differently when they saw it. Boy racers wanted to beat it at every set of lights, every roundabout. Gardaí stopped us frequently and older drivers were very nervous if you came up behind them on the open road.

Other than that, most standard Irish market cars will not affect people's reactions much, it's much more likely that your driving style will cause problems than the state of your car, unless you're a modifier with a peanut for a cerebellum.

everyone except aul wans and 5/7 series , e/s class drivers move out of the way when Im behind them in my pickup , great way of getting people out of my way considering they can only see a grille in their rear view

as for other cars , mpv's especially renault scenics and small cars like micras I keep a long distance and always take it far more cautiously as I have yet to see a competent driver out and about in an MPV

whenever I see boxy starlets, 'glanzas' or any other micro sized council flat special I overtake if possible, better them being behind me so I dont have to jam on when they pull some batshít stupid driving 'menouver'

I become more cautious around heavily modified cars, particularly at night.

More of a chance of some scumbag driving it thinking he's the dog's bollix and doing something stupid. (and yes 90% are fine, but its the few idiots that ruin it for everyone)

    other than that, not really.

Tbh, i assume everyone on the road is a complete idiot, and could do something mind numbingly stupid at any second!

Right now I have a small hole in my exhaust so around 4k rpm it gets quite loud. This is fine until you come up behind some idiot that thinks they are too good to be overtaken by a "boy racer". Always annoys me ever since I almost crashed because of someone speeding up as I tried to overtake them going 50 in an 80. Tried to complain then and made up 2 different stories catching themselves out.

So yes I do think some idiots change their driving around certain cars. And then some people just go crazy during a full moon

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 319 ✭✭mickob16

I agree that a small few idiots give boy racers bad names. When a little focker in a 1litre corsa pulls up behind you aggressively with an exhaust that could send a rocket to the moon its hard not to get angry.I was travelling to Cork last year when a boy-racer comes flying up behind me.There was a long line of traffic ahead and a bmw ahead overtakes the car in front of him.So what does the boy racer do!!He shoots out and overtakes the bmw as the bmw is still on the other side of the road. And as if that was enough to make u hate him it turns off a km up the road. There rant over!!!

I've had loads of exec/ sport saloons and estates for about 7/8 years now but my current car- 323f hatchback (2.0 sport) gets tailgated everywhere I go. It's very annoying.

i know when i had my bora before and it was pretty standard and my driving style would have been the same i had a lot less people driving close to me or twats in corsa's and saxos and the likes trying to race me!

That was lession one I had when I learned to drive. Very true.

I do see where the OP is coming from. I do tend to get tailgated more by A4, A6, 3 and 5 series. Not many mercs though. Then you have the random asshole boy racer types who could be in any car.

Even with that I dont believe in every 3 series driver is a dick thing for example but if I did see a 3 series I would be a little more wary of that then the Starlet.

All in my humble Golf Estate from 2000. BULLIES! :( :P

I remember someone posting here a long time ago that his wife changed from a Micra to a BMW.
Suddenly men would let her out from side streets and filling stations whereas before they wouldn't.

I don't think I react differently to different brands, but I probably do.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19,986 ✭✭✭✭mikemac

Not a motor but I have a little 50cc scooter and a large motorcycle

Some drivers reckon I must be a spotty teenager on that scooter, driving up my ass and squeezing past me in lanes so you have to defensive and take up your position in the lane.
They'd nearly be brushing my sleeve some days as they squeeze through non existant gaps.
Maybe a scooter is the same an L plate driver, instant compulsion "must get past, they'll slow me down!!!"

But this doesn't happen on the motorcycle, get far more respect though I drive the same style

people tend to panic and get the fcuk out of the way very quickly when they see a set of angel eyes in their rear view mirror, if heard some of my passengers ask, why does everyone let you pass them in this car? so it seems black 5 series bm's with the angel eyes on intimidate some people for some reason.

I don't think it's necessarily the "brand" of the car. It's the likelihood that the micra is going to take longer to get where it's going, had she been driving an almera she may not have seen any difference, but the men in the 2.5 litre BMWs don't want to get stuck behind a slow moving 988cc car!

I'm guilty of this too, I have to admit, but I would judge the driver as much as the car. I would let the following drivers out; Young guys/men young girls/women, middle aged men (depending on their car). I would rarely let middle aged women out, they never acknowledge your act of kindness, they usually do my head in if I'm behind them to be honest, they're too indecisive, jamming on just as they get to their turn and before indicating, coming to a full stop at roundabouts when there is no other cars to be seen etc

    /gross generalisation :o

I try to avoid transits mainly because they're generally driven by travelers and they just don't give a ****.

I drive a stock 206 but its the SE that comes stock with a spoiler and alloys. I also have a monster sticker on the left rear quarter panel, I always find boy racers revving up at lights beside me when I'm not particularly interested. The other day I also got tailgated by a Volkswagen Tourag when I was doing 80 in an 80 zone. It was really pissing me off so I sped up (I know I shouldn't have but he was pretty close and it was kinda unnerving) and he speeds up and is right up my arse again! But never made any attempt to overtake.

i have a mk1 golf gti and had a mk3 gti some years ago and the amount of civic and starlet and at the time saxo drivers up my arse and overtaking me on corners was unreal..they still do it when im in the mk1 ..my mother borrowed my mk3 for a week and left it back to me 2 days later cos of all the tailgating boyracers

a guy who used to work with my missus had a 911 turbo and used to give her the odd lift home and she said the driving that she witnessed overtaking the porsche was crazy,,,she said it to him one day would he not be tempted to burn some of them and he simply said....i have the power...i know and they know it...no need to show it...
    perfect reply

also if i see a new 4x4/suv on the back roads i just pull in and stop. most of the ones out around here that are used for the school run etc will not keep in to the ditch on there side!!!

They expect you to veer slightly off to your side. They plan on thinking that you're pulling in for them and will hold their line. You pull in, stop, genuflect, say 'top of the morning to you sir/ madam' as they zap past with their imaginary entourage of security vehicles and body guards.

What I do in this scenario is the exact opposite of what they're expecting. When you're a fair way back (I mean waaaay back- I'm not suggesting anything dangerous here) gently veer slightly but just noticably onto THEIR side, just a little bit. They **** bricks and start slowing and pulling in, and by the time you've veered over, they've done the same.

Again, I'm not suggesting leaping out at them. People are lazy and see you're pulling over as a sign of weakness. Psychologically, what you're doing is wrong-footing them into waking up and showing a little courtesy. If they were slowing and pulling over anyway, they won't even think about it. I don't do this to be a smartarse- I just want to prevent having to go hard on the brakes and driving my precious motor into the potholes because they're too special to show consideration to other road users.

IME, any vehicle is likely to force you into your ditch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,088 ✭✭✭sean1141

true. but i just stop on the road. i dont pull into the ditch, i just keep tight to it which forces them into the ditch if the want to pass me!!

Well in Cork, if you're on back road, it's almost given that if you go left of center, you're in a world of potholes so your choice is brake hard and stop tp preserve your car or plough through them. The car coming in the opposite direction usually either ploughs through them (because they don't know any better) and forces you into the ditch or doesn't move at all and allows you do all the stopping and moving over.

When i had my old Bora i had to take the badges off so other drivers in 'high powered saloons' (garda patrol voice) would stop annoying me.

There is a certain type of driver out there that will react to a 'badge' mostly dicks in 'high powered saloons' and not the stereotypical boy racers in rice rockets.

Personally my driving style is the same for everyone i encounter, cautious and expecting the unexpected.

been on the road a while so I have good spatial awarneness depending on what cars are around me... ahead in particular.

BMWs and Mercedes, Audi etc are by and large the safest drivers to be driving behind.. as well as Honda Accords and the like

The drivers usually dont ass around or act the maggot and cause no problems.

Then we move to the nightmare territory

Hyundai Accents, probably the worst cars to be stuck behind, might as well be stuck behind this...

    diggers_03_0810-lg-66718289.jpg

Micras are in the same category but everyone at this stage knows what to expect with them.

Dont think I have seen worse cars than Accents tbh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,088 ✭✭✭sean1141

don't talk to me about micra's.. seen two in the fog last night that really stood out.. first one i met coming the other direction.. holding up a long string of cars with rear fog light and hazzards on!! looked like it was doing about 30kph..(100kph zone) the fog was not that bad and they were only after passing a hard shoulder so i wouldnt think they were having .... second one i came up behind was doing the same speed..(i was begining to think micras had a fog mode on them at this stage) fog was nearly cleared on this section of road.. all of a sudden they jammed on the brakes, stopped dead on the middle of the main road, indicated and pulled into the hard shoulder! i passed by and they pulled out again to plod along at 30 again!!

When I see a Tipperary South car going under the limit I will pass them out as fast as I can. They will generally slow and speed up constantly. Slowing down when a car is coming from the opposite direction. Stop on a roundabout when there is no traffic, Brake continuously unneccessarily and all the other bad driving habit s which can frustrate, That is why it is best to overtake em as quick as possible.

    That, and students in Micra's.
