Engine loses power when clutch in

    Hi all

Not a regular here, but on the off-chance that somebody is up on a Sunday morning and feels like diagnosing....

Pulling away from a junction last night, pushed in the clutch pedal to go into first gear, started to accelerate and get to the bite point, car lost power, revved a bit harder, power dipped further and then cut out.

Tried to start it again, it turned over but didn't start.

Left it for a couple of hours, meanwhile topped up the water in a couple of the cells in the battery as it was low.

Tried it again, started fine, idled fine for about a minute, reversed a yard or two, put it into 1st and then at the biting point, same thing again - power gone.

It's a 2000 Peugeot 306 estate, full service 2 months ago. The battery randomly died last weekend (had been driving for a few hours and therefore should have been fully charged - car was parked ~5 minutes with the lights on, then wouldn't start, jump started fine). Battery is about 2 years old.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

Im currently having the same problems with my 1.6 petrol passat. When i come up to a junction or roundabout, and i clutch to drop a gear, the revs drop and she conks, but she will start again atraight away.

I have mentioned it to my mechanic and hes going to clean or replace the throttle sensor tomorrow. Maybe this will help you.

Thanks for that, will add to my list of possibilites from google searches! another suggestions has ben the coil, or spark plug cables.

Time to get the AA guy out I suppose....

Yeah, had similar symptoms in a Renault though not as extreme. Took out and cleaned the tip of crank sensor and cleaned the throttle body.
Since you changed the battery recently double check it is securely clamped down and all leads are clean and tight.

Thanks. Battery definitely clamped down properly (checked that last night when it happened), don't know about the leads.

I'm ashamed to say that my mechanics knowledge / willingness to try doesn't go much beyond opening the bonnet, staring, cursing, and ringing someone else.

Must get braver and learn a bit about it!

Just to finish up on this - turned out it was the battery (or it seems to have been just that, fingers crossed).

It had a dead/dodgy cell rather than being entirely flat, hence why I was getting intermittent success from it and able to jump start it.

One nice but lazy AA guy, one inept Halfords guy and one thorough, professional AA guy later and I'm back on the road, minus only the cost of a new battery (fair enough) and an extra, unnecessary AA call out (irritating).

    Thanks for suggestions above anyway.
