Thinking About A New Bass

    Hi all,

I've been thinking about purchasing a bass from a guitar shop in Dublin. The bass is just over a grand, and being a poor student I can't afford it all at once :o

So this shop does one of those deals where you pay back a certain amount of money a month after paying a few hundred, I've been considering doing this.

Has anyone on this thread had any experience doing any deals with shops like that? Is it a good idea?

    Thanks

It depends on how much more you end up paying for the item. What is it exactly?

    A USA Fender Standard Jazz.

If you are prepared to get a used one, you would probably get a good bargain. The shops here are dear to begin with, and with the deal you are talking about, you can bet you will pay more. As Ravelleman says, it depends on how much more.

If you want to go the used route, keep an eye on www.adverts.ie or www.gumtree.ie

Another option would be to buy on line. I got two basses on line with no problems. Only problem here is you dont get to try them out first. :(

I don't want to get one off adverts or gumtree because I want it in Olympic White, nobody has them. Rigsby, are you saying it's not a good idea?

Also they said that they would match Thomann's price of €1,158.

The best thing is to try and find out how much extra you will pay. If it is a case that you can pay the Thomann price, with no extras, over a given time, then that seems fair to me, though I admit to having no experience of buying a guitar this way.

    http://www.gak.co.uk/en/fender-60s-jazz-bass-olympic-white/15782

    €808.80 ex shipping. :D

GAK always worth checking. Often have stuff well below Thomann price.

Fender prices in the UK took a massive hike in the New Year.

American Standard P Basses were £849 from GAK on 31st December. They're £1048 now.

    This applies across their range.

The Fender American Special Telecaster was £600, for example. Now it's £729.

    Extraodinary difference in price, obviously.

Oh right I see. It was this then http://www.gak.co.uk/en/fender-american-standard-jazz-bass-olympic-white-maple/15914 that he was looking for. Thomann all the way then! ;)

Paying that much for an American Jazz is just wrong.

Wow, are Fender basses normally that expensive? Are you paying for the name or there something to actually justify the high price?

Yes they are that expensive over in Europe. In America I've heard they're a bit cheaper but not by much.

Also I'm not just paying for the name, I've been considering this for a few years now, it was a battle between a USA jazz or a Musicman Stingray. The jazz won in the end. :D
