There's 3 of us in the house and we pay 1/3 of the rent to the landlord separately.

One of the lads has dropped out, he told me he's informed the landlord who said he'd speak to us.

I take it we're not liable to pick up the rent? I mean, small print or not, I'm not doing that and I'll just move out. What's the standard practise here? Will the lad who's leaving have to pay up the rest of his rent or find a new person or something?

I dont see why he shouldnt pay his rent if he dropped out.

If the landlord has agreed to let him off with it you two should just say no and see what happens.

Is there a lease in place? And, if so, how many of you signed the lease? If he co-signed with the rest of you, then he is still liable to pay his share of the rent unless he re-assigns his part of the lease (i.e. finds somebody to take over the room). It depends on what arrangement he has made with the landlord. You should chat to them as soon as possible and see what the landlord says.

Yeah we all signed the lease. Oh well I guess if he's going back living at home and presumably working more hours in his part time job he'll actually be up on money, as he'd have been paying the rent whether he dropped out or not.

It's pretty standard just to find a replacement for someone who moves out.
