Firstly mods, if there is a better place for this, throw it over.

A friend just asked me this, and I'm stumped.

Say, someone sets up a website and email system for a small/medium company. So say you have about 10 or so email address, info@businessname.ie director@businessname.ie etc.

Is it at all possible to find out if the person who set up the email addresses is accessing the director account?

They have it set up so that they can access the PC in work from home, so could the person who set up the accounts access the PC from their own computer?

Is it possible to find out IF he is accessing it? I know changing passwords would stop/hinder him, but can you actually tell if he is?

Going by the small amount on info you have given (not intentionally, I know) I am going to presume a few things.

First off, you seriously need to pin down who you allow remote access to "the Pc in work".

Anyway to your question, you can set up an audit for successful and unsuccessful logon attempts. This will tell you what account has been successful or unsuccessful at an attempt to logon and the IP address where that attempt came from.

How to enable that audit depends on your OS.

    Hope this helps (a bit).

It is possible that an administrator level user can view the incoming and outgoing emails, for example on an Exchange system these can be viewed on Exchange System Manager. All server systems should have access logs.

Does your friend have access to the logs?

Cheers guys. Sorry for being vague, but I didn't have an awful lot of information, and don't want to give away any specific details.

I knew it was possible, I just didn't know what way it was done.

The person that set up the accounts/system is actually the maintenece/IT guy. They suspect him of prying on the managing directors emails.

I'll inform them that it is possible, but I don't particularly want to get involved in trying to solve this, as it's more heartache than it's worth.

you forget that Outlook, Gmail and others will not display images unless the reader request them to be displayed.
