I want to buy an economical diesel car.. but a nice car

    1.4L or 1.6L..

I was thinking either a Toyota Corolla 1.4 or a Peugeot 306 HDI..

Now the thing is I may need to sell the car again in 7/8 months time if I decide to go travelling and leave this wonderful country.. So I want a car that will hold its value.. The Corolla seems to cost alot more but they hold there value better..

I have a budget of €6/7,000 depending on how generous the bank manager is.
Has anyone any experience of driving these cars or any similar cars in thos category.. What would ye go for in this situation??

If I thought i'd be selling in 7-8 months then unless I was doing huge mileage i'd buy something old, large-engined and petrol. Buy cheap and minimise your depreciation.

Buy something for €1000 and the most you can lose is €1000
    Why put yourself under pressure?

It's beyond silly to spend 7k on a car that you may just sell on in a few months, what's the point?

Why not just wait until you've decided weather or not to go traveling?

I have to agree with most of whats been said.

In fact I's suggest a mid 90's Toyota on the cheap as when it comes time to go you will sell it easily

    Hmm, the irony.

The chaps are right though, spend a grand and you wont have to worry.

If its only 7 months you should probably get a petrol civic or something if your mileage isn't astronomical.

I currently drive a 00 corolla 1.4 petrol.. I drive 250 miles a week commuting to and from work so I 'm really beginnig to feel the pinch since the price of petrol went up..
Anyway going by the advice here, I think I'll stick with the corolla for another while

Spending 7000 to save 50quid a week is madness. If your car is running fine just use that.

Its not even saving 50 quid a week.

    250 miles at 40mpg is 28.4 litres a week.
At €1.45 a litre its only €41 a week for petrol.
    Even at 35mpg its €47 a week.

    With a diesel at 50MPG you'd spend about €31 a week at €1.35.

So it'd be a saving of about a tenner, definately not worth the change I would say.

250 miles a week is small mileage really.
