Urgent Travel Help: Passport/6 month rule for Malaysia

My girlfriend and son are flying to New Zealand on Jan 13th til the 28th. They're flying via Malaysia and have just been informed that their passports need to have at least 3 months before expiry for NZ and 6 months for Malaysia. My sons passport is up on July 17th of this year and she's panicking that there'll be a problem either getting there or getting home as apparently they enforce this rule. Has anyone got any info they can give?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Jay

Also, my girlfriends passport is 9 years old. Does she need to get a new one? It's still in date and doesn't expire until Aug 23rd 2011.

    They're flying via Malaysia

    Flying via and entering Malaysia?
On the way out the passport is still within the 6 months, so no problem there either way, but are they actually entering Malaysia the second time or is the plane just stopping there?

The plane is just stopping there as far as I know. Either way she's not leaving the airport. It's only a connecting flight.

It depends on the actual airport, in most airports you don't go through any kind of passport check if you're just passing through. You need to somehow find out what kind of airport Malaysia's is.

If they are just staying in International transit then there isn't a problem, they won't be interacting with Malaysian immigration. I wouldn't lose any sleep over this.
