just wondering which is the better buy

    a 2006 1.9 diesel skoda €7,500
    90,000 miles high tax €585

    or

    a 2008 1.9 diesel skoda €11,500
    60,000 miles low tax €156

    assuming all other things equal?

would it be hard sell on the 2006 car in a few years time because of the high tax?

    many thanks

How long are you planning to keep it, what reasons do you change a car?

If you get rid of the car once its 8 years old for example:

    06 €7500
    3xtax €1755
    Total €9255
Guess value 8 year oct €2000
    €7255
    Cost per year (3) €2488

    08 €11500
    5xtax €780
    Total €13280
Guess value 8 year oct low tax €3000
    €10280
    Cost per year (5) €2056

Even if the low tax makes the car worth on more than one with high tax (2k value after 8 years) you're still only talking €2256 a year which is still better than the 06

The 2008 shape looks alot nicer imo, i have a 2002 one and its great but i just dont like the 2006 shape one atall :D

Overall i would say looks aside and focusing purely on money the 2008 one is the better option but its all down to if you are willing to spring all that money together, + a 4/5 year credit union loan would prolly make it manageable and whatever you get for your old car.

Also don't be afraid to look in the north/uk as there are some serious deals to be had.

Good luck with whatever you decide fella ;)

Many thanks Colm mcm, it looks like the 08 car would be a better buy so all other things being equal. Also the 08 car would be cheaper to sell in a few years time compared to the 06 car if the low tax band stays.

    many thanks

    That's great, thanks Jimbob.

I'm not sure if the 08 version is the new version or not. I hav'nt seen it yet. My sister told me that they continued making the old version alongside the new version so it could be the old version!
do you know if thats true? i.e. that an 08 skoda (with the low tax) could be the old version.

    Many thanks

It depends where it was made , like some factories were still making the 2002 shape up till 2007 or so with all the added extra's thrown in :D

I think it may be the 2003+ shape tho as the newer one was late 2008 early 2009 i think

Just to clarify, the old octavia would be the one that came out in 1996
The newer one had a facelift recently but is still the same car.

The octavia tour is the original 1996 model and was also available till 2010 (same as 00 facelift)

thanks Colm mc m, so it could be the older version then if the older version lasted till 2010. i heard they improved the front of it in 2009 but my sister thinks there was a newer model in 2008 also.

anyhow if it is a thing that its the old version sure it wouldnt matter too much as long as its in the low tax bracket? i.e. wouldnt the old one be as good as the new one driving wise - im not too pushed about how it looks outside cosmetically

    many thanks

The old model is pretty tight in the back, aim for the mk2 if you can!

that's brill bazz 26, thanks a mill for that.

in the event that the 2008 car is version 1 i.e the version that ran from 1996 to 2010 aside from cosmetics do you think it would be as good engine wise and car wise etc as the newer version that was brought out in 2004?

    many thanks

thanks colm mc m, yea my sister said that the leg room in the back of the old version was restricted.

but aside from that if it is the old version im going looking at, i might go ahead and get it if the price is right ..

the back leg room isnt a major factor for me as wouldnt be people in the back seat (only very occasionally) but just wondering if engine wise and mechanic wise there would be any major difference between them

    many thanks

Are they actually fitting the Mk1 with the latest low emmissions technology? I doubt it.

It begs the question though, if you're not bothered about the car design would a low mileage older octavia do then?

Have a look at autotrader uk site for low mileage examples.

    hi colm_mcm

i was thinking of that, thinking of a 2003 skoda with 135 000 miles but
the 08 skoda seemed good value and low tax, also i was thinking the 08 skoda would be more reliable as i wont have too much back up if the car breaks down and needs to be fixed for a few days etc, thats why i was thinking the 08 might be a better buy as it is newer and has lower milage

so once its good value, the reliability engine/mechanics would be my main concern

so do you think the older version would be as good engine wise/ mechanics wise/ reliability wise as the newer version 08 skods ?

if so would get the older version ahead of the newer version if the older version was priced more competitively

    many thanks

The octavia tour is 135g emissions so is 156 tax as well.

Try and find an older one with 50 or 60 on it, an 08 tour is the same car as a 01.
If you're not hung up on the reg, seek out an old mint condition with big spec and a full service history.

    thats great Colm, thanks

the 08 one i am going to look at think it is old style has 60,000 miles which is ok miles and the low tax so :)

if i looked at an older one than that it would have the dearer tax and higher mileage.

just in terms of reliability i think the lower mileage one and newer one would be better for me and i like the low tax too.

i know prob could get an 06 or 07 cheaper one with 50 or 60 k miles if were lucky but then would still be an older car and have the dearer tax ..

also the 08 one with the lower tax would be prob easier to sell in the future

will sleep on it, thanks for all your help

"..inproved the front.." = facelift. Not an improvement, as such - more a marketing ploy.
