I am considering doing an Online 120 hour Telf course in a few months. I have been considering doing the Celt course instead but It will cost me to much money to do this. I am interested teaching abroad possibly in Europe. I am just a bit concerned about the quality of the tefl course is this the standard course that employers require you to have.

I am told that any less than 120 hours is not accepted but I am also concerned in what employers look for first, the Celt course or the Tefl Course.?? The Celt course prepares you much more for standing in front of a class and teaching, but the tefl course im told does not qualify you for this, it only prepares you for the theory. I am concerned of how well prepared will the Tefl course teach you and what kind of benefit it will give me. How hard will it be for me to stand up in front of a class without having done it before and not feel fully prepared to do so? Also is there any books I could study on top of the 120 hour tefl course that could prepare me to stand up in front of a class and teach?? Any information I could get from you would be great thank you

There are different schools of thought.

The CELTA course, which I think is the top-end qualification for those who want to start teaching English as a foreign language, costs 1,500 and is available full time or part time at International House Dublin.

    The CELT TEFL costs 1,065.

How much does the online course cost? I think a 120-hour online course would set you back at least 500. I'm dubious about them, to be honest. The CELT/CELTA courses are intensive, and it's possible to fail them. I don't think it's really possible to fail the online ones, which is why employers regard them sceptically.

It also depends on yourself. Standing up teaching in front of people is scary to begin with. Doing the CELT/A course helps you get over that. Having said that, the i-to-i online course is generally for people who are just interested in teaching English as a temporary gig.

If the online course is starting to look like it will cost you upwards of 700 euro, you should probably look to see if you can stretch your budget to a part-time CELT/A instead (or one month full time, if you can take a month off work).

It's a better qualification, is internationally recognized, and will offer you much better value for money.

    I hope this helps.

I wish to inquire about teaching English overseas particulary in europe as well as other country,s. I am trying to find out not what the best qualification is to have because as I understand it is the Celt course. I am trying to find out which certificate is most asked for to teach English overseas, There are many Certificates to study for and I am still unsure about which one to take, I fear the Celt course is going to be to expensive for me so I might have go pick the course that proves the most popular sought after choice.

Can anybody help me with my Quary. ??

Why don't you go find out how much it will be first instead of worrying about it! Once you know that you can start planning. And from what I saw those online ones are not regarded highly. But if you'll always find some employer willing to accept them.

I did the ACELS CELT, which is the month-long/120-hour course you're talking about. It was a tough month, but I made the money back in 3 or 4 weeks of work the following summer. There's no reason for you not to be able to do likewise. It cost c. €1000 then, in 2009.

Online courses, in contrast, aren't worth a penny candle. It's a false economy to think your few hundred spent on them is as good an investment as €1000 or €1500 in a CELT or CELTA. Just today I got an email from the college I did my CELT in for a tefl teaching vacancy. Before Christmas, they were advertising vacancies in Spanish schools. Make the €1000 investment: it will pay off.
