Is it possible a future software/firmware upgrade will enable MHEG5 on this set or is it a hardware problem? Thanks in advance.

Have you tried setting the Region as UK and not Ireland ?

The user manual states the following:

"This TV does not support digital teletext (MHEG) functions"

I just downloaded the UK manaul for the "B" version and it seems that MHEG is available on that. So UK setting may work, will try mine later.

The x20 range are UK Freeview certified (I think), MHEG5 is a requirement for Freeview.

Gally which model do you have ? The brother has a TXP50X20L and it does not do MHEG5 at the moment and also you cannot set it for UK as it is not an option

Ok, I can confirm as Spawker said that there is no Uk option. There is a list of about 20 European countries it can be set to though. I wonder if Mheg would work on one of those. Its a long process of retuning etc though so I'm not keen to try it.
I tried setting the country to "other" but Mheg did not come up.

Big difference between the Panasonic TX-X20L and the Panasonic TX-X20B.

The difference is that the X20B will not even tune in the Irish DTT channels as it only has Freeview capabilities as distinct from Freeview HD. Why ? Because all the service type descriptors are not defined in the firmware despite having MPEG4 capabilities to do so.

Whilst the L range is the European and Irish model does have the same MPEG4 processor and does tune in the Irish DTT stations as it does have the full service list defined in the firmware. However it also has MHP as middleware (another interactive platform in competition with MHEG5) which is not compatible. Panasonic actually know what we are using and have done for a long time, but they really dont give a toss, thats why we continue to be profiled with Norway Austria etc in the latest 2010 range)

This chap has the Irish model, the L, otherwise he would be asking how come I cant receive the Irish channels, not why cant I get MHEG5 text.

    Be thankful for small mercies!

Yes the model Ihave is the TX20L.I intend to buy a combi STB and hope the latest TRIAX combo box-at present being tested for Saorview compatibility-will solve my problem.

Thanks STB, that was a great explanation as I was starting to think I should have just got the B version in Newry.

Anyway, Mheg problem aside, it's a great TV, and got it at good price of €537 with 5yr warranty ( I saw it at €499 recently) so can still recommend it to anyone who wants a plasma and is not that bothered about teletext or intreractive services, whenever they may arrive.

Waiting for reasonable priced HDD DVDR to come on market and will use that as my tuner source, only one I see that would suit Irish DTT is the Panasonic Freeview HD range DMR BW780. Do you know if they have the same problem with Mheg. ?
