Bushes into wishbones mk4 golf

    I'd burn this thing only the petrol would be worth more and until such a time as petrol prices come down I need to replace the wishbone bushes both sides and probably ARB bushes and drop links.

    The last two are not such a big or expensive job. The wishbone bushes on the other hand are not that handy to replace so if anyone has any tips or even better could advise me on someplace that might press the bushes in for me I'd really appreciate it. I'm in the laois area.

    P.s I'm working on a tight budget here so buying new bushes and getting them pressed is working out cheaper, plus its an 11yr old golf that has sucked me dry so you know yourself.

    I done them on my fathers mk4 golf and they are handy. You need a press though. The ball joint separates with three 13mm bolts on either side and i think the wish bone is secured on the car by two 18mm bolts. You need to remove the drop links which are on 16mm nuts. Its a while since i done them so it might be a bit different.

    just buy the wishbones with the bushes already in them ..they are actually fairly cheap for an arm

    No that configuration sounds about right. Getting the bushes in safely and securely is the problem.

    For the difference in price between two arms and two bushes it will be a good bit cheaper. It literally takes 5 minutes to press out and in with the new bushes.

    No that configuration sounds about right. Getting the bushes in safely and securely is the problem.

    You didn't by any chance do the two rear axle bushes at any time?
    Didn't do the rear but i wouldn't say its a DIY job after looking at them.

    you can buy a complete wish bones which are easy enough to fit. they cost between 40/50 euro

    New bushes for both sides will be half that price.
    Fcuk the scrapyard mate, they are going to be perished as well probably. Just get the new bushes for €40 and you'll have peice of mind too!

    Might just give Bradshaws in Portlaois a ring Monday morning and see if I can't get a better price.

    price genuine bushings. spurious ones never last half as long espicaly if your driving on bad roads.. try george dalton in colt for fitting. guy knows his vws!

    The car is 11 years old and this mechanic your on about knows his VW's? Any monkey can change a set of bushes:p I think the OP wants to save money.

    Thanks Plug! We are living in a bangernomics economy(Well some of us are) and so if I can just get them pressed and bolted back onto the car safely and cheaply through my own steam ill be very happy.

    My old man bought a car from Daltons years ago Sean. Might give him a bell and see how obliging he is and press the bushes in for me. For a fee of course

    When you remove the arms bring them to a garage and get them pressed. They might only charge you a few bob. Or you could try cut them out with a hack saw and a chisel and THEN get them pressed. Cheap and cheerful.

    so fit a set of cheap ****e ones. and in 6 or eight months time he will have to fit another set, that wont save money!! op has no way of pressing in the bushings and is looking for someone to do it no?? i guess you hammer them op if you wanted to do it all yourself but its never a great job. try getting the price of genuine vw ones from a dealer in the north. you will also need to get your tracking checked after fitting.. save unevean wear on your tyres

    Given the price of bushes I've no problem paying extra. 60% of my traveling is on piss poor roads at around 600mls a week so I will need quality.

    my mate had a mk4 tdi and he put 2 sets of cheap bushings in it in the space of 12 months. he then got vw ones and they were still perfect when he sold the car two years later. i cant remember what he paid but it was not that much more

    +1 George did my rear axle bushings recently, he does a top job at a good price.

    Best option - Remove arms yourself. Drill cut/chisel etc to remove old bushes & shells. Take to garage & get new ones pressed in, then refit yourself.
    Perfect job for 50 to 60 all in
