XP Pro upgrade path to Windows 7?

Original post edited, I got Vista and Win7 mixed up... it should read as follows:

I'm using XP Pro at the moment but the game Black Ops runs like mud.
Even though the previous COD Modern Warfare ran sweet on it.

I'm thinking that moving to Windown 7 may improve things, since Black Ops was developed with this in mind.

Question, is there an upgrade path to get to Win 7 that won't require a complete system re-load ?... I don't want to loose all my applicatoins etc.

I seem to recall that going from XP to Vista then to Win 7 will preserve all applications etc.

    Is this true?

    Thanks.

It depends... Some permutations of XP to Vista are upgradable, some require a clean installation. For example, you can upgrade from XP Home to any of the Vistas, but only from XP Pro to Vista Business or Ultimate.

There's a table on the Microsoft website which should help you:
Upgrading from Windows XP to Windows Vista

Personally, I'd go for a clean install. Backup your files off your computer, format Windows XP and install from scratch.

Also, I'd seriously recommend Windows 7 over Vista. It's an excellent OS; looks good, runs fast and is stable. You can't upgrade from Windows XP to 7: you'll have to do a clean install. But I think it'd be definitely worth it. :)

I wouldn't recommend going for two upgrade installs in a row - there's a good chance that'll just leave you with a Win7 install laden down with crud and not taking advantage of the improvements that 7 has over XP.

Before upgrading your OS to see if it improves game performance, though, I'd suggest checking out your hardware against the game's minimum and recommended specs. 7 seems to generally perform a bit better than XP on the same hardware (assuming driver availability and support, which isn't a given on older machines). However, you may run into graphics issues - I know several people who've found that ATI graphics drivers for Win7 are awful (particularly the 64-bit iterations) compared to NVDIA drivers for roughly equivalent cards.
