Wrestler's names

Hey guys, was a wrestling fan since I was a young lad, back in the Hogan/Warrior/Macho Man days, up until around 2005.

I recently caught an episode of Raw, maybe November and have been watching every week without fail - It's not as good as it used to be, a lot tamer as you all already know, but I can't help but find it entertaining TV and have to tune in every week! (Can't say the same about Smackdown, though)

Anyway, I apologise if this was done before, but I didn't see anything similar - if it was, please merge threads! I thought it might be a fun thread!

I just wanted to know, if anybody knows any of the stories behind how any of the wrestlers come up with their names, I'd love to know more about it! I know The Rock came from shortening Rocky Maiva which was a mix of his father and grandfathers names, its the only one that springs to mind... Are there any good stories that any of you have heard regarding how a wrestler got their name?

Also, what would you pick as your own name if you were ever to make it in the "squared-circle"?

Legend states a wrestler was coming to WWF from WCW, and was informed his name was going to be The Ice Baron. Wrestler didn't know what to feckin think and informed management he hated the name and it would get him nowhere. Wrestler was told to go home and think about it, and was given the weekend to come up with a better name or else go with The Ice Baron. The day before the deadline, and he had nothing. Then his wife commented that he better hurry up and drink his tea before it goes stone cold. Wrestler went back to work informing management he would go by the name Stone Cold Steve Austin.....and the name was then promptly ignored for a good while...

Ringmaster 3:16 would have been way better. He might have sold a few tshirts instead of fading into obscurity.

Hulk Hogans name came from Vince's desire to have a somewhat Irish-American ethnic hero since Sammartino was Italian-American, Pedro Morales was Latin- American so on.....so the name Hogan was chosen. The name Hulk came about when he was on a talkshow sitting beside the actor lou Ferigno (who played the character of the Hulk on the TV show) and the host quiped how Hogan was bigger then the Hulk

Chris Irvine decided to use the name Jericho after listening to a album by the name "Walls of Jericho.

The ex Million Dollar man lackey Virgil's name came from Vinces desire to piss of Dusty Rhodes, whos real name i believe is Virgil.

Would be interestin to know how CM Punk came up with his name, and what does it actually mean.

Kurt Angles parents came up with his name :pac:

Punk changes the answer every time someone asks him. The most common answer you get when he's asked is CM = Chicago Made = Chicago Made Punk

It was Vince Sr, to be clear

The names they come up with in FCW are ridiculous sometimes when they base them on a famous athlete or film star. Abraham Washington, maybe because he looks a little like the US president

I thought it was Baron Von Ruthless. Mick Foleys autobiography mentions it.

Aye himself and CM Venom, but he changes it all the time. I think the Chick Magnet is the real one though.

That's true. And to continue the punnery, Virgil's name in WCW was "Vincent", in reference to Vince McMahon; and was later renamed "Shane" in reference to his son. His whole career as been a piss-take :o
