Quick question for all you car experts out there, what are Peugeot 407 diesel cars like to own, do they tend to cause much trouble from a running perspective and what would be the best engine size to buy, looking on some car web pages the engine size goes from 1.5 to 2.0L. What sort of a price would you expect to pay for a 2006/07 car. Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Plenty of info here... http://www.407owners.com/forums/
but it's £10 per year to gain full access.

Petrols are cheap to buy as resale prices crash tru the floor.
The 1.8 petrol gives an average of around 33-38 mpg...:(
Diesels are the best option but from 100k mls+ the can have diesel particle filter and dual mass flywheel problems.....but saying that most modern diesels today have the same problems...

As somebody who owns one i could whole heartedly tell you to stay the fluck away from them!!!!

In fairness they are econonmical and fairly nifty. But atfter that i have have nothing positive to say. Constantly beeps and flash's some stupid warning at me. It feels sh1te to drive. Is fairly pricey with regards to servicing it and some indie's dont have the prog to reset a number of the faults etc.....

I'll do ya a great deal on mine:D

If ya do have specific qustion just ask.

Have to agree. Own one 2005 1.6 diesel.

Its very "rattly" and lows speeds and very "whiney and loud" at higher speeds 100km+.

Electronics are terrible. There are hundreds of sensors on the car but most are faulty. Constantly beeping and displaying messages about tyre pressure not being monitored and low tyre pressure, "abs" faulty, fuel level too low etc etc. All of these have been checked and are faulty yet appear and beep everytime you turn the car on.

Its also a very hard car to get in and out of if you suffer any sort of back problems like everyone who drives our one.

Have had numerous maintenance bills i'd say at least 2-3k at this stage and only have the car a year.

I wouldn't recommend one to my worst enemy at this stage it has caused so much bother

One of my neighbours has one as wishes he hadn't done away with his Laguna II. That should give you an idea..

The tpm's will show up a low pressure message once the tyre(s) drop below 30 psi.
The valves on the tpms can corrode and break if the owner is not careful when pumping up the tyres...this is also a common problem on the laguna's.
A "abs" faulty message is usally down a failed speed sensor....once replaced it should be fine.
Fuel level to low usally indicates you need diesel...:)

Row these have all been checked as i said.
The valves on the tyres cost a couple of hundred quid to have them re coded to to the car once they break. They break so much its not worth having them coded.
The company who make the abs sensor have gone out of business and as of the last time we were at the garage no company had not been sourced to supply new ones.
As for the diesel sensor the garage can't seam to find a fault with it. The computer sensor registers even when the car is full of diesel. We're all stumped by that one

Did you get your faults checked by Peugeot or an Independent Garage...?
The tpms system can be disabled if need be...You can swap out the old tpm stems for these.. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/JAGUAR-LAND-RANGE-ROVER-FORD-tpms-valves-433mhz-/370461977279?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item5641412abf you just need to remove the corroded stems and fit the landrover ones...keeping your original sender so theres no need for recoding..:)
With the diesel sensor problem i have never came across it before......Do you leave the ignition on when you fill up with diesel..?

I know the tpm sensors can be disabled. Am only waiting for the next service to get them done cause at this stage they have me driven insane.
on the other hand i didn't know the same tpm sensors were used in other cars, we were even told all the other Peugeots use different ones to the ones on the 407. Seams like a bit of hassle to have to buy a new one though every time the things break though.......which is extremely often.

I never leave the car on when filling up, I have been warned that this can screw up the electronics although i'm not sure why but I still always do it out of habit. The guys in the garage think maybe the clock is reading correct but there is a problem with the sensor receiving the info. They said this could be the problem but would require to take the dash out and have a poke around behind it. Again alot of hassle and money, which i don't want to pour into this car so will probably have it turned off aswell.

Is the garage a main dealer...?..If so they should be able to check all the dials..lights on the dash with a good diagnostic tool.
Sounds like you have been unlucky with your 407....:(

I know last year there was a shortage of rear abs sensors but there seems to be plenty out there at the moment.

What are they charging for abs sensors at the dealers...??
I usally get them for ebay as i have been quoted crazy money at the dealers..

Yeah... by the looks of things ebay is much cheaper. they are 50 for rear and 80 for front at the main dealer

So can anyone suggest a decent alternative to a 06 or 07 Peugeot 407 diesel?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,206 ✭✭✭✭amiable

My Mrs wants a 407 and i'm not sure. Any advice? I'd really like to show her a few decent alternatives. I'm no car expert.

Give up an idea what your lookin for i.e. Price range, max engine size, saloon or hatch and i presume diesel?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,206 ✭✭✭✭amiable

Sorry about that. Price range 7-8 k. Diesel. Family sized car. We have 2 kids and another on the way. She also likes the Audi A4 and BMW 3 series but i think they'd be too expensive to buy and keep. Please excuse my ignorance if i'm wrong. Any more info needed just ask.
    Thanks

By the way i like the Mazda 6 and the Toyota Avensis but again i think they might be out of my price bracket.

    I have a 04 407 1.6 hdi with 98k mls and all i have done since i bought it
    @58k mls was replace..

    1)lower balljoints X2
    2)To up dpf additive.
    3)Cranks shaft pulley.
    4)Abs sensor X1
I change oil and filter every 9k mls and use Mobil 1 5w 30esp (low ash) which is Dpf friendly.

It has plenty of go for a 1.6 diesel and averages around 52 mpg.
I still think my 15 year old 406 td is more comfortable tho......:)

You should be able to pick a 07 for around your budget as everyone is after
the 08 for the low tax bracket, the way i look at it if your getting 07 for a few grand less then that few grand would cover alot of road tax...:)
