I am contemplating doing a fetac level 5 Web design course. I know that CMIT and ITEC do these courses. However I haven't a clue which one to choose. Which course is better? Has anyone done the level 5 Web design at either of these?

These courses teach practices that are out of date. Nowhere do they mention CSS and div based layouts. Instead they very likely use table based layouts and many other bad practices like in page fonts and frames. While I'm not responsible for employing recently 'qualified' designers these days, in the past I wouldn't employ someone from one of these kinds of courses. The mention of such courses in a CV would mean the CV is in the bin.

Also a crucial skill in web design/dev is the ability to learn it for yourself. Almost all the know-how is out there via Google.

Save your €500ish and try these free options instead:
    • Head over to www.w3schools.com and learn html, xhtml and css for starters. (Only do the html bit as an intro as xhtml is the vastly improved version)
    • Learn how to hand code (NotePad++ -free) before using editors as almost all have issues
    • Get yourself a graphics package like GIMP for free. PhotoShop costs a small fortune
    • Use the FETAC course outline as a rough basis as to what you should learn, except use xhtml and css, and don't use frames or tables for layout
    • Get used to looking at the source code to find out how things are done on a page
    • Read design/development sites, forums and blogs

That'll keep you busy for a while.

    Good luck.

Thanx for that info. I guess there are better options out there. However I was kind of hoping to study a course, rather than doing all the research myself. Are there any other short term courses that are good?

Hi this may be too late for you but could be useful to others looking for similar information.

There is a FETAC Level 5 web authoring course with CSS which uses XHTML and CSS. I teach the course at the moment and it would give you a solid foundation from which to progress. The course code is N22953.
