The spacing of the spindles would be one concern if that was the way you were going these links might help.

    Ok, some ideas.

    1. Make it for a standard size, easy to get matress.

    2. Ideally make it so that it can be easily dismantled and stored! Baby is only gonna be using it for so long, after that its going to be taking up space and need to be stored.

    3. Make sure its baby friendly, ie rounded corners, soft edges etc.

    4. Choice of material and finishes; most paints etc these days are safe enough, but if its gonna be covering mdf or the likes remember that babies like to chew on things, you dont want them munching mdf!

    5. Make it sturdy and of the right proportions, baby might get obstructurious, kicking, rocking.......standing while doing already mentioned etc.....you dont want him/her toppling over the side or knocking the cot over!

Thats all I can think of off hand! :)

If you're anything like me, by the time the thing has been made, the child will be too old for it :D
