there is an article in the Tribune saying that if pubs want to stay open and attract customer they should bring down the price of the pint to around two fifty.

    can you see this happening?

publicans have the beal bocht, yet if they are overcharging, thats too bad. you do not need to go the pub to have the craic when you can buy four cans for almost the same price as a pint.
apparently the offis and supermarkets are causing serious headaches for publicans.

€3 a pint of guinness in Mc Swiggans. Same price for a glass of wine.

Has been for the past year.

When has this not been the case then? This is not something new, take-away drinks have always been way cheaper, all across the world too. It's a fact of life and the pubs have added value to justify their higher prices.

As a matter of fact I think the price level in Ireland is extremely high for alcohol. In Holland you buy 24 bottles of 330ml of A-brand beer for around a tenner. Here you're lucky to pick up a sixpack of 500ml cans for that. I know there were some really good offers around christmas but that was an exception, unfortunately :)

If price is a concern, maybe the pubs could start offering B-brand beers for lower prices. There is a lot more margin to be made on them.

Very true, the price of booze in supermarkets is very high compared to many european countries.

If anything they should be dropping further.

Licencing is the problem. Pubs are getting seriously ripped off for their licences which just isn't sustainable in these times.
But yes, drinking out is just far too expensive and has been for a long time, I just don't drink out anymore at all, I just feel like I'm being ripped off paying around or over a fiver for a pint.

fair play to them then. i am surprised that this is something of a well kept secret.its better to bring the prices instead of waiting for the government to introduce some kind of minimum price.

I drink guinness cos its cheaper. for some reason a foreign beer has to cost around 5.50. why do we have to pay more for something that is only semi exotic. I mean paulaner is from munich which is not really the other side of the world. does it really cost that much more to import it to galway?

Is the vino a pour from a large bottle of house, or one of those little bottles? Either way it's a decent deal, but the little
bottles usually have the same amount of sulphites as the big bottle, which makes for a head wallop in the morning, even if you've only had a couple! :)

Its 3euro in quite a few places for the last while. You can have a pretty good pub crawl around Galway for 20euro if you avoid the 'fancy' drinks.

You do the cartel that is the VFI have deliberately kept the price of a licence high all by themselves.

How do pub licenses work? How much and is it a one-off payment or an annual thing?

Couldn't imagine going into Kennedys during the day, great on a night out though.

McSwiggans has a really odd layout.. like 2 tables in a corner, 1 under a TV, couple of stools and a really dark room at the back. Not really anywhere to stand either

I've always figured that the reason drink is such a rip off in Ireland (pubs, clubs and supermarkets) is because the government know we'll still buy it...

I shudder to think what the levels of anti-social behaviour would be like if drink were cheaper, TBH.

in the interests of scientific research I ventured into that same drinking emporium, where the pint was indeed 3 and deemed to taste okay.

staff and clientel were neither friendly nor unfriendly. a young persons place to be

so if cheap boozes equates anti social behaviour they must have terrible problems in other EU states where the booze is significantly cheaper.

Ahh, no. The composition of their population is significantly different. You know full well what I mean.

Actually the opposite might apply. Its the shots/alcopops thats driving the young wans mad.
If spirits were increased and pints reduced they might stick to the pint.
When I was growing up we drank serious amounts of pints and there was rarely any trouble. The worse that would happen is some young lad would puke a load of Guinness over you.

could the anti social behaviour here not be linked to the fact that there appears to be an absence of police on the streets of Galway.

Can't agree. If drink was cheaper then it means that people might go to pubs to purchase alcohol rather than getting hammered before they go out at all. That argument just doesn't stack up.
The price of drink in pubs has also resulted in more people just lorrying back wine at home which is not the most desirable consequence of dear pub prices.

Nonsense, the only reason we have so much ASB is the FF/VFI insist everyone is flushed on to the street at the same time every weekend.

Until last week there were eight nightclubs and four(?) ‘late bars’ in the city.
So if you put that many people on the street at once competing for Taxi's and Kebabs what do think is going to happen ?

Most people in Galway are responsible,
Most people are capable of going to supermac's without fighting over curry chips and most us of don't see why we should be punished for the actions of a tiny minority.

Unless of course these decisions have been influenced by vested interests all the while..........
