No drive to left wheel

    Quick question -

On Christmas morning my wife's 2002 Ford Fiesta LX was frozen SOLID. It took us about 20 minutes to thaw the ice and get the doors open etc. The front right wheel however wasn't moving at all. We tried to get the car moving numerous times but there only seemed to be drive going to the left front wheel (which was spinning on the ice) while the right front remained static.

We finally got it moving and the car seems to be okay but my question is - if drive is going to one wheel and the other is not moving at all is that a very bad thing?

It's very unlikely that you have a problem. The reason your car was only spinning one wheel is down to the differential. The power from the gearbox will take the path of least resistance and because the other wheel had grip, it will spin the one on the ice instead. Have a quick google for more info!

To see a standard diff working on ice, see the video of this guy doing a 3 minute wheelspin. You can clearly see one wheel stopping when the other wheel has zero traction (and all of the power ;) )

hopefully you made a better job of getting moving than him!

Okay, that 's a relief. Thanks for the feedback!
