Hi, I have a PC but the OS was put on by a friend, ie not genuine.
    1)
I wish to purchase windows 7 for the PC but are the specs OK for this?
2.00 gigahertz AMD Athlon64 X2 Dual Core, 295.35 Gigabytes Usable Hard Drive Capacity, NVIDIA GeForce 6100, NVIDIA MCP51 Serial ATA Controller.

    2)
I am also buying a laptop
This comes with Windows 7 Home Premium Edition 64bit. If I buy microsoft office 2010 home and student 3 user, will I be able to use it on both my new laptop and old PC?

    3) If I also buy windows 7 I will put it on the PC. 3A) However can anyone advise where and what I should buy and 3B) If the laptop comes with windows 7 is it possible to upgrade to a 3 user lisence as opposed to buying another single lisence?

Sorry a bit long winded but I am not great with software, any advice appreciated,
    Work

Windows 7 will run just fine. What you need to consider are the applications or games you'll run on it afterwards. they will perform OK, some great, and some not so great, depends entirely on teh software.

The conditions of the Office licences state that, if you have Office installed on your home PC, you are legally entitled to install Office on one additional portable device for your own use. So, yes.

    • you probably don't need any more than home or home premium
    • you can install whatever you like on the laptop. The laptop will come with an OEM license, which is tied to that laptop. If you buy windows seperately with a 3 pc license then you can install that copy on up to 3 pcs.
as for this 3 user thing, I'm not sure if i've missed some recent licensing thing, or you're confused about it. You can have as many user accounts on teh computer as you like. The Office 3 user license just means you can install that on 3 PCs.

Only the Windows 7 Family Pack allows you to install it on three computers. But I don't think they're being sold anymore. You'll have to purchase a copy of Windows for each individual computer.

Wolly mammoth staes "The conditions of the Office licences state that, if you have Office installed on your home PC, you are legally entitled to install Office on one additional portable device for your own use. So, yes."

So who is right, it seems scandelous you need to pay multiple times for something only one person (house) will use!

What do you mean by "who is right"? woolymammoth was talking about Office, I was talking about Windows 7. Office has a different license to Windows and vice versa.

Thanks for that, its a bit Greek to me, but I get it now.

Microsoft licensing has always been Byzantine and subject to regular revisions Always read the EULA for your revision of your product and check microsoft's definition of phrases as they mean what microsoft claim they mean, not necessiarly what you or I would normally understand them to mean, if doing an upgrade remember restrictive terms from the package upgraded can downgrade the conditions of your new license.

Windows has always been at least one license per pc.
You need additional licenses if you have different versions in dual boot, and for some versions you windows license is limited to one partition on one disk on that machine.

As for the office license,it means only the primary user of the desktop can use office on the portable device and that both licenses can't used at the same time, and it doesn't apply to OEM copies

MICROSOFT OFFICE 2010 DESKTOP APPLICATION SOFTWARE
Below are three separate sets of license terms. Only one set applies to
you. To determine which license terms apply to you check the license
designation printed either on your product key, near the product name on
your Certificate of Authenticity, or on the download page if you obtained
    your product key online.

    1. RETAIL LICENSE TERMS

    c. Portable Device. You may install another copy of the software on a
portable device for use by the single primary user of the licensed device.
    ...
    d. Use with Virtualization Technologies. Instead of using the software
directly on the licensed device, you may install and use the software
within only one virtual (or otherwise emulated) hardware system on the
    licensed device.
    e. Remote Access. The single primary user of the licensed device may
access and use the software installed on the licensed device remotely
from any other device. You may allow others to access the software to
provide you with support services. You do not need additional licenses
for this access. No other person may use the software under the same
license at the same time for any other purpose.

    10. NOT FOR RESALE SOFTWARE. You may not sell software marked as “NFR” or
    “Not for Resale.”
    11. ACADEMIC SOFTWARE. You must be a “Qualified Educational User” to use
software marked as “Academic” edition. If you do not know whether you are
a Qualified Educational User, visit www.microsoft.com/education or
contact the Microsoft affiliate serving your country.
    12. HOME AND STUDENT SOFTWARE. For software marked “Home and Student”
edition, you may install one copy of the software on up to three licensed
devices in your household for use by people for whom that is their
primary residence. The software may not be used for commercial, non-
    profit, or revenue-generating activities.
    ..
    17. UPGRADE OR CONVERSION. To upgrade or convert software, you must first
be licensed for the software that is eligible for the upgrade or
conversion. Upon upgrade or conversion, this agreement takes the place of
the agreement for the software you upgraded or converted from. After you
upgrade or convert, you may no longer use the software you upgraded or
    converted from.

    19. REASSIGN TO ANOTHER DEVICE. You may reassign the license to a
different device any number of times, but not more than one time every 90
days. If you reassign, that other device becomes the “licensed device.”
If you retire the licensed device due to hardware failure, you may
    reassign the license sooner.

    20. TRANSFER TO A THIRD PARTY. The first user of the software may make a
one-time transfer of the software and this agreement, by transferring the
genuine proof of license directly to a third party. The first user must
remove the software before transferring it separately from the licensed
device. The first user may not retain any copies of the software. Before
any permitted transfer, the other party must agree that this agreement
applies to the transfer and use of the software. If the software is an
upgrade, any transfer must also include all prior versions of the
software. does this mean the buyer can't sell the software ??

    2.OEM LICENSE TERMS
    2. INSTALLATION AND USE RIGHTS.
    a. One Copy per Device. The software license is permanently assigned to
the device with which the software is distributed. That device is the
    “licensed device.”
    b. Licensed Device. You may only use one copy of the software on the
    licensed device at a time.
OEM can't be moved, can't be used on a portable device

    A. LIMITED WARRANTY. If you follow the instructions, the software will
perform substantially as described in the Microsoft materials that you

    B. TERM OF WARRANTY; WARRANTY RECIPIENT; LENGTH OF ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES.
THE LIMITED WARRANTY COVERS THE SOFTWARE FOR ONE YEAR AFTER ACQUIRED BY
THE FIRST USER. IF YOU RECEIVE SUPPLEMENTS, UPDATES, OR REPLACEMENT
SOFTWARE DURING THAT YEAR, THEY WILL BE COVERED FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE

software, the remainder of the warranty will apply to the recipient.
TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES, GUARANTEES OR
CONDITIONS LAST ONLY DURING THE TERM OF THE LIMITED WARRANTY.

SOFTWARE AT NO CHARGE. IF MICROSOFT CANNOT REPAIR OR REPLACE IT,
MICROSOFT WILL REFUND THE AMOUNT SHOWN ON YOUR RECEIPT FOR THE SOFTWARE.
IT WILL ALSO REPAIR OR REPLACE SUPPLEMENTS, UPDATES AND REPLACEMENT
SOFTWARE AT NO CHARGE. IF MICROSOFT CANNOT REPAIR OR REPLACE THEM, IT
WILL REFUND THE AMOUNT YOU PAID FOR THEM, IF ANY. YOU MUST UNINSTALL THE
SOFTWARE AND RETURN ANY MEDIA AND OTHER ASSOCIATED MATERIALS TO MICROSOFT
WITH PROOF OF PURCHASE TO OBTAIN A REFUND. THESE ARE YOUR ONLY REMEDIES
FOR BREACH OF THE LIMITED WARRANTY.

    ...
    F. WARRANTY PROCEDURES. You need proof of purchase for warranty service.
    ...

the Middle East or Africa, Microsoft Ireland Operations Limited makes
this limited warranty. To make a claim under this warranty, you should
