What Reticule For the Field?

    Lads,
Was thinking about dressing up the rifle with another brand scope. I have mostly Burris', but am considering a Zeiss.

I saw a reasonable Zeiss for sale - the Conquest, but dislike most of the reticles.

Please advise which reticle you are using, more specifically for deer.

I have no problem with deer out to 200-300ya, with a max comfort range of 400ya. I would like to double those numbers, but do not like crosshairs, German Posts, and such when getting out to that distance.

Please post your reticle, if possible.

One of the reasons I endorse the Burris Fullfield II is due to its reticle, as shown below. Zero at 200ya and you are good to 600ya.

Anyone using the Conquest with the mil-dot reticle? What's the translation on Zeiss mildot separation at 100ya?

What makes the Nightforce NP-R2 reticle truly unique. The vertical line of the NP-R2 reticle is divided into 2 M.O.A. increments (approx. 2 inches at 100 yards). These vertical increments are used for range estimation, multiple zero points and accurate bullet drop compensation. Any size target can be easily ranged using a simple formula: (target size in inches ÷ M.O.A. x 100 = range in yards). Once range is determined select an appropriate hold point based on the bullet drop of your cartridge. The vertical spacings can easily be split into 1 M.O.A. increments further enhancing long-range accuracy. The horizontal line is divided into equal 5 M.O.A. increments for windage compensation.

    NP-R2-32x.pdf

Does this work at every magnification or is it just at a set mag??

Planning on getting one in the coming months

    2moa is 2" @100
    4" @200
    6"@300
    8" @ 400

If I use the second and third reticle line I can aim bang on out to 400 yards on bunnies.

It's handier than clicking as you don't have to remember to click back.

Only at the marked magnification on the scope ring as they're second focal plane. Also it's not unique, mil dot scopes and any scopes with hatchings have been using the same principle for yonks.

First Focal Plane scopes can range at all magnifications but the cross hair size gets bigger and smaller varying the magnification

Second Focal Plane scopes can only range at fixed magnifications (technically not true because you can still work it out but it is more complexity than you need) but the cross hairs stay the same thickness throughout the magnification range.

Brother has the the NP-R2 aswell on his stalking rifle. I have the same on my foxing rifle.

This is a cool link to try out the Zeiss Reticles Linky

The number 43 reticle looks ok

The above is only true at the magnification marked R on the scope ring.

    It sure does! :D

At what mag does the reticle work at m.o.a. Increments??

Do it work at 32x or have you to have it set at a lower mag??

It's preset from the factory and I think it's at about 22 on my scope. I never use it anyway.

Rangefinder and dial it in. The scopes have turrets which can be set to a "known" position when zeroed. So a simple glance will inform you if you've forgotten to dial it back down.

OP what exactly are you looking for in a scope reticle? Is your Burris scope ffp or sfp? And is it one of those special type designed for the bullet drop of a particular calibre or bullet?

    on the 8-32 it's 22
    0n the 5.5-22 it's 12

The fact that it is in the second focal plane means the reticle still stays fine @ 32 and 22 on both scopes.

I have a range finder, and i am well used to measuring distances out to 400 by eye +/- 10 yards or so

Next time you are going town to fergal whites PM me and I'll bring one along for you to look through

I'll take you up on that offer but more than likely it will be after dark that I'm traveling!

So yeah the Burris you have has the ballistic reticle. Do you not like the Zeiss Ballistic ones?

I found this on the Zeiss reticles but it is useless as have the figures have no units Zeiss Reticle PDF

Thanks for the Zeiss link - pretty cool.

Actually, I love the Burris ballistic plex (BBP) reticule.

I just saw the Conquest for $400 - will be able to pick on up in person, but don't like the reticule. I was wondering what other hunters like/prefer.

I find that on the 200ya and 300ya range the BBP reticule is spot on.

Maybe I will step up to a Black Diamond?

Anyone have a modern Redfield? I love the auld ones. One of the best scopes out there for the money.

Although they are their own separate entity, isn't Red technically a Leupold, or at least under their ownership?

I have a conquest with a mill dot and target turrets.
I then got a custom target turret from www.kentonindustries.com
They will make a turret to match the ammo you are using.
I got the LR Hunter version which is marked every 25 yards out to 700 yards. I personally dont shoot deer past 300 yards but find it great for targets and vermin.

I like the looks of this one - takes into account a crosswind.

I have the below left on order, we'll see how she fares.

Sorry I made a mistake, my custom turrets are the speed dial version.
very simple and quick to use in the field.
