How do I find out if my accountant is professional & reliable?

If (s)he has a website, they may have some client references on that website, you could try emailing the person named.

You could also contact their institute, explain that you are thinking of engaging their services and ask are they in good standing, but apart from that, meet with them and trust your gut.

The fact that you have made two posts asking the same question http://boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056139404 means that perhaps you are not confident with the choice you have made, in that case choose again.

Well if you have been with him for a year or two well the answer is you would be getting warning signs of his/her reliability if for example if your returns weren't submitted on time despite books being submitted adequately on time. Also, not replying to emails, phonecalls etc in timely manner (if out of office communicate with clients etc exception would be bereavement, emergency etc) missing agreed appointtments/meetings.
Professionally as long as he or she is preparing/auditing your accounts or preparing your tax returns in line with legislation and accounting and auditing standards together with giving out engagement letters setting out the services being provided, appropriate accounts packages, on going communication throughout the engagement, they are acting in a professional manner. Some firms are more fancy with packages, letters etc but each practice is different.
If you feel you aren't satisfied then the simple answer is to move to a different firm.
However, if you feel you have been adversely affected by your firms service there's bodies like CARB where you can report grievances to. Depends on which body your firm is affiliated to.
PS: I've saw in a previous post that you are seeking an accountant. Best people to talk to would be recommendations by word of mouth most importantly from other people in business or some people are recommended an accountant from one of the managers in the banks as they would have ongoing dealings with them through other clients over the years and know the good and bad ones.

    Hi

If you want to ensure that they are registered auditors you can check on www.cro.ie who are required to keep a list.
