How to apply for a job with the NCTS...

I was going to post this in Work & Jobs but I'm really hoping the mods might let me leave this here in the hope of coming across an NCTS employee here...

Basically I've been keeping an eye on the NCTS website for the last year, I've been more than surprised to see that there hasn't been a single job vacancy on the site in the 12 months that I've been checking.

It's hard to believe that over a 12 month period, there hasn't been a single vacancy within this organisation, that has been awarded a public contract by the state. You'd think that part of the terms of winning the contract would be that they would have to advertise vacancies... Also, they opened a new outlet in Greenhills recently, again though it seems that they haven't advertised any vacancies within this jurisdiction, a country with mass unemployment...:confused::confused:

Could any NCTS employees maybe shed some light on this and advise as to how to apply for a job within the NCTS or what the story is with them when it comes to filling vacancies???

You have to be a qualified mechanic, are you?

It's not for me it's for a very good mate of mine who is a highly qualified & experienced mechanic and has all the necessary paperwork in relation to his formal qualifications... He's also unemployed and very close to emmigrating, he pointed this out to me many times over the last year that it seems that he cannot apply for a job within one of the biggest automotive employers in the state, as they appear to be hiring or advertising these jobs somewhere other than in Ireland...

Has he not considered that they may not be hiring ? Like many other places for the last year or two, barring retirement I doubt many folk would have left their job in the NCTS.

Well the fact that they opened a new outlet in Greenhills this year and managed to fill it with a compliment of staff without advertising the jobs here is what makes him think there is an issue here with how they advertise the vacancies. He's been checking this site on a weekly basis for the last year, along with others that he checks when he is applying for jobs...

It's hard to see how a business that has no less than 45 outlets nationwide according to their own website, doesn't have a single vacancy in a 12 month period, what about temporary contracts to cover female admin staff on maternity leave or staff on long term sick leave???

A relative of mine works for the NCT crowd and he recently managed to organise a transfer from one part of the country to another when his partner moved her business.

I think there are two issues at play in the company to explain why there are no vacancies being advertised, first there will be very little attrition from any of the NCT centres because very few garages are taking on new mechanics so there is virtually no movement of people from the NCT centres to regular garages, most of the traffic in the trade is mechanics being let go as punters are servicing their cars less or moving to independent one-man operations. Second as the case of my relative shows, even when there is a vacancy it will probably be taken up by someone trying to move to a different part of the country.

You would think as the car stock ages and annual checks are coming in for 10 year old cars that the NCT would be taking on people but it doesn't appear to be happening. It may be that existing employees are being paid overtime to cover the extra workload, that is usually a cheaper option for an employer than taking on additional staff.

When they are hiring, they advertise on the fás website. He should really be checking all job sites all the time especially the fás one. They had 7 or 8 NCT jobs advertised last november.

Thanks for that Barry... My mate is pulling his hair out and next stop for him is Australia the way things are looking... Very little going on in the private sector end of this industry in terms of quality jobs with decent employers...

Well it doesn't have a send us your CV or job section on their site so unless he is reviewing the national press every week I don't see how he is so sure about the fact they don't advertise in Ireland. As with many companies they may well get their relief staff from agencies :)

Has he ever written to them requesting where they advertise their positions or how they hire ?

He's just applying for jobs left right and centre and not getting much by way of a reply to the vast majority of them. They do have a "Careers" page on their site and it's been saying for the last 12 months that they currently have no vacancies and I think that's been fuelling his opinion.

I would have thought that working in an NCT centre must be very boring for a fully qualified and experienced mechanic?

I understand if you're out of work you would probably take anything.

Same repetitive tests day in day out and no troubleshooting........it's the buzz from troubleshooting that gets my adrenalin going (and I'm not a mechanic)!

    Good luck with the jobhunting!

Fairly simple and obvious reason for that, the previous thread you refer to was posted or more dictated by my mate himself when he called around to my house last November, he doesn't use boards so I logged in and created the thread for him and he told me what he wanted to ask and I helped him with his post. And yes, I had to give him a hand with the typing the last time, mechanics being two finger typers! :D

The topic came up again over Christmas, was there any more news on the NCT jobs front, and rather than drag up an old thead I created a new one.

    ;)

I do think though that the point is valid, regardless of who is making the point, you'd think that the largest automotive employer in the state would have vacancies on their website??? Like it's 2011?!?:confused::confused:
