Computer freezes then switches off-solutions?

    Hi guys,
Don't know if people have had this problem with their laptop. Since Tuesday night it keeps freezing on me after about 30 minutes. The 'internet symbol' (you know the blue circle) comes up, the computer goes blank and I have to reboot it. This happened even when the internet was not plugged in or connected.
Any experts out there? I scanned my computer-but only a quick scan because it would switch off before I could get a whole scan done.
    Thanks in advance

It's hard to diagnose something like this, hopefully it is software related (it sounds like a virus to me). What brand is your laptop and what operating system is it running on?

Thanks for your reply. It's a Dell inspiron, only a year old. I downloaded the software (recommended on this site) to run scans on it, but it doesn't seem to have helped. Would you say I should bring it somewhere?

Yeah sounds like you've got a virus after downloading free software, download malewarebytes antimaleware then reboot in safe mode(hold F8 on boot) and run a full scan. That should do the job.

If it is powering off by itself it could well be your CPU fan isn't working.

have you restore disks? if so you can get back to factory image which should include ms word if you had it preinstalled. If not where did you get it?
