land cruiser and pajero are complete work horses, plenty power and proper low range gear boxes. iv'e towed a 3 tonne digger on a triple axel ifor williams trailer with a 2.8 pajero, she had her tongue out but did it okay.with big weights it's some times more about breaking power that pulling power. the only thing about the newer jeeps such as the pajero and crusier, is they have dual mass fly wheels. which don't like towing and will only last 100,000 miles or so. so if and when it goes, id suggest you to get a solid fly wheel kit if you do alot of heavy towing. it wont be as nice to drive but im sure you can't aford a fly wheel change every 100,000 miles.watch out for injector problems with the land cruiser. make sure the pajero's 4wd system engages and DISENGAGES properly as once this system goes wrong, they are a night mare to find the problem.

Sorry to jump on board I'm also considering purchasing Landcruiser or Patrol from 99 - 03 or 04 depending on price just wondering about reliability and mpg of these jeeps in this age bracket??

Looking out my window here i have a nice view of the a trusty 99 landcruiser LWB, 3.0TD manual (not d4d), 208,000 miles (about 150,000 done while it's been livin here) and not bother at all still goin like the day it left the factory. It's been a great workhorse and done lots of tough work.

Personally, for a 4x4 of that 99-03 age group i prefer landcruisers over pajeros.

A big chunky vehicle with heavy body and transmission etc is not something to get if you're going to worry a lot about mpg but this one can do mid 30s mpg on a run, but average late 20s-early 30s, some of the figures quoted online seem a bit pessimistic to me, unless they were doing a lot of city driving.

Arsin about on muddy tracks/mountains/whatever stupid place seems like fun to drive it onto... that's a different story, but you're askin for it then.
