    Are places like pc world obliged to take them ?

    Try adverts.ie people buy broken laptops on there all the time and strip them down for parts i no i do it.

    What laptop is it ? If you dont mind telling me

    its an amilo 1425. i've pretty much broken it up myself , so don't know what
    parts would be of any use. will have a look at adverts though.

    I was hoping to give it to a retailer even if I had to pay them a fee for recycling it..

    no local recycling center? They take electronics there.
