Hey all new to fourms, decided to join because got some great info off the site and am looking for some advice now. I'm looking into getting a rifle for foxing, not sure what to go for thinking either .17hmr or a .223, as i said will mainly be for foxing maybe a little target shooting. Also under the new firearm laws would it be harder to get a license for a centerfire over the rimfire?

Get the .223. Far and away the better tool for the job. For foxing, you shouldn't have a bother licensing it.

Mr.Woodcock welcome to the mad house

Get the 223 you won't want for another gun for foxing, no matter what others may say here and they will be along soon enough.

There's plenty to be had second-hand, just ring around as many dealers as you can.

See the sticky-wiki in the for sale section for a gun dealers list.

Was thinking that. Since its mostly night time sooting should i look in to a moderator? also any recomendations for rifle and scope? not applying for a month or so hoping to have about 2 grand budget. was looking along the lines of a tikka t3 laminated stainless, not sure bout the scope do.

    rifle for foxing
    .223
    a little target shooting

There has been no charge for the butchery of your post :)

Get a 1:12 twist for foxing, or get a faster twist and longer barrel for target shooting, but yeah, .223.

Most certainly apply for a moderator. You'll enjoy your shooting more.

Not meaning to pee on your bonfire, but do you have any experience with firearms? Only I just got a .223 and I had to call my supers secretary to check up on the status of the application. She dug it up from the pile and the first thing she said was "Ah its a .223, do you have experience with firearms as these are not normally approved for first licenses!!. Good job I have shotty and .22lr for a few years where I learned about firearms.

Might not be a problem for you in your area but I'd check it out with your super (NOT local FAO as sometimes they're not sure) first as putting some hard earned on a new rifle to be refused the license will be no fun....

Every district is different unfortunately so the only way to get straight answers is from the horses mouth. Ask the local people dealing with your license, Super or Super's Clerk and they'll advise you.

well going by the first license i have to asume there wouldnt be much trouble, it took bout 2 months and was never foned once, it would be under the laytown garda station.

Another very good option is a .204;) From what i have read on here and on other sites it seems like a great little varmint round and a very accurate on paper ,I would keep my options before putting a deposit on something.

    Consider a .204 Ruger lad.

If you are considering a .223 or .204 here is a great thread with information on both.

Thanks lads you've all been a great hand, but if anyone has any advice on the legal side of things like the reason for ownership etc, would be much obliged!!:D

Simply what you said in the opening post ,Go in and have a nice chat with your super , Chat about how you want the caliber for fox shooting ,Just make sure you have all your paper work in order not forgetting your permissions ,Matter of weeks all going you will recieve your licence .After that happy days:D

    Do you have adequate permissions?
Are you a memeber of your local gun club?

If yes to the above then I'd say thats more than half the battle won. If you do apply don't forget to apply for a moderator as well.

lad been honest with you if you have a shootie i should see a problem with gettin a licence they might ask to you get a firearms safty cert but this is very rare ive only heard of one or two lads haven to get one

as far as your app goes any questions you have ask for the sergeant over the fire arms in your local station cause there is normaly only o e super for firearms in one station in the county and he deals with the whole lot as far as i know and most of the sergeants are shooters anywAy so mose of them will tell them what you need to put down on the form once your straight with them they will help you
