Hi, I have a Genie heat pump installed for the last six years which is working quite well, however I've been told by an installer that the R22 refrigerent used in it is no longer available and if the current circuit leaks,
it will have to be replaced with a whole new refrigerant system. He reckons it may be more economicial to just replace the whole heat pump at a cost of 6000 euros installed!(I know a grant may be claimed for a new one but I don't think I qualify as I claimed a grant earlier this year for solar panels)
I'd be interested in anyone's views on this. I think I paid in the region of 7000 euros for the unit at the time. The company manufacturing them went out of business shortly after I purchased mine but apparently parts are still available.Thanks.

I would advise talking to a specialist refrigeration company, there are commercial alternatives for most CFCs previously used in refrigeration, including R22. Often no mechanical changes are required, however the refrigeration system will usually need to be completely emptied of the old refrigerant and oil, possibly flushed, and refilled with new refrigerant and oil.

    Example replacement refrigerant here

pete is correct, should your system need a top up a replacement gas is used no problem.
Should you lose all of your gas it becomes more of an issue as pete says however replacing the whole thing for 6000 is ott.
if you are in need of a good fridge guy pm me and i'll pass on my man's number to you.
    if it aint broke......
chances are there is years left in it.

Thanks for that, it's another option that hopefully I won't need.

as it stands the phase out date for r22 has been extended from june 2011 to some time in 2014 so for now no panic but r22 is getting more expensive to buy and is not something we are allowed buy and store in bulk as with every refrigeration gas usage has to be explained to the powers that be
