How do you go about claiming back the 20% tax after the laser eye surgery??

You need to complete a Med1 form.
You can do it online by logging into PAYE anytime here: http://www.revenue.ie

Or else you can download the form here http://www.revenue.ie/en/personal/popular-forms.html and do it by post.

At the moment I'm finishing off my PhD and starting a job in April/May.

Could I get the laser done before that date and claim back tax when I start paying it?

AFAIK you can't claim the MEd 1 back until the end of the tax year anyway, so you won't be able to claim until next year.

Its not the most user friendly system.

After you log in there are a series of boxes accross the top. They're labelled "Overview", "Profile", "2011", "2010" etc.

Click on the one for the year you want to claim back on, e.g 2010.
It will then show your tax credits and have a list like PAYE credit, personal credit etc etc. Scroll down the list until you see Health Expenses then click on the arrow on the right hand side. Then just follow the instructions.

    Hi,
Anyone interested in getting their laser done in optilase if they are PM me as I have a referral which gives you €100 off you need to say this on your initial consultation.

I had laser done by them about 6 weeks ago and it is the best thing I have ever done. I have better then 20/20 vision and had no dry eye, glare etc. They were so nice to deal with and the follow up is brilliant.

If you log in and go to the tabs at the top where the years are, click on the year you had it done and then on the bottom left, click on claim health expenses tax credit, and you fill in the details there, you will need your p60 to fill in some of the details :) that how I did it anyways, I'm yet to hear back from them haha
