Can I convert my Mpeg 2 TV to Mpeg 4? Through the PCMIA slot?

    Hi all,

I have an LG 50PG3000 which has an PCMIA (CI Slot) on the side of the TV. I have searched for an answer to my question.

As the TV is Mpeg 2 so I cannot pick up Irish Digital with out a settop box can I use a card to slot in the PCMIA slot to convert my TV to MPEG 4?

I have seen reference to Neotion Cards such as the Neotion Pocket Duo but I have not seen any confirmation that this would work in my scenario?

    Can anyone help please?

I dont want to buy another settop box

cheers in advance for any help. or if you could direct me to another link which answer my question

Also already on the Black List! http://www.saortv.info/theserrestrial-saorview/the-black-list/

Maybe we should collect pictures too.

Those "SCART" adaptors are rubbish even for the Digital TV they do work with.

If the TV was sold you inside last two years and did not have a disclaimer that it was Analogue only, you can get a refund/replacement. http://www.techtir.ie/blog/cinocat4/no-dtt-get-money-back

If the TV sold this year as TV rather than Video Monitor no matter what other disclaimer you can get a refund. http://www.saortv.info/2011/01/05/aso-in-less-than-two-years/ (or possibly since 1st Nov 2010 as ASO might be Nov 2012 and Service Launced on Oct 29th 2010 after over 2 years of transmissions).

TVs that don't work on Irish Digital are now "Not fit for purpose" as new sales other than CLEARLY labelled as a monitor

Do you have sky already installed?? If so do you not already get the rte etc?? If not do you have a freesat system or even a dish mounted on your house? I understand that those scart recievers arent fecking brilliant but its an option .. If you have a dish its a different story. But you still may/may not need a reciever depending on what box you have already

So basically your saying that the scart tuner is ****e and you should go and fight with who ever sold you the TV for another basically the same ****e tuner built into your tv?

Seems like its dish and box all the way....

Are SKY taking up the HD channels for RTE I wonder?

I want to just clarify that I have sky hd but I'm moving this tv to another room and I am upgrading the main tv. I bought the LG tv in 08. I don't want to get sky multiroom for the new room so that is why I am asking about using this tv with just rte digital. It will be mostly used for movies and games but would also be used for watching sports ie hurling rugby and racing. Sd or hd doesn't bother me. So will these cards work for rte digital in Sd?

Saorview currently broadcasts RTE2 in HD, RTE1, TV3 are also moving to HD later this year. There will be no SD versions so the cam cards are useless.

None of which really matters because you TV is MPEG2 it can only see/receive broadcast that are flagged as MPEG2 broadcast. When you go to do a scan your TV can not see MPEG4 broadcasts because they are flagged as MPEG4 you will only receive radio channels

STB or new TV is your only option.

Another unfortunate person with an 08 TV which will be defunct without a set top box.!
Its a disgrace that there is not a simple upgrade available for the mpeg 2 tv's. TV's should not be sold if they are not going to receive the signal just two years later!

Why are we always screwed in Ireland-people in this situation should refuse to buy TV licences unless there is some kind of subsidy offered off a replacement tv.

It's the fault of the mainly UK retailer in Ireland who dumped outdated UK stock onto the Irish market in the full knowledge the equipment will be useless here.

The UK was switching to FreeviewHD and the UK customers where holding out for FreeviewHD set's. All the UK retailers where fully aware of the Irish DTT specs and they gambled on the fact there is such a high number of SKY and cable TV users who would most likely never need the use of the terrestrial tuner.

The OP should return the TV to the retailer, selling a "Digital TV" in Ireland that is not capable of actually receiving a digital signal is grounds enough for a replacement. The specs where known and ignored by the retailers and unless the TV was specifically sold as a monitor only it was mis-sold.

Argos are changing their sales policy now that people are beginning to cop on to their scam TV sales - http://boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=69928313&postcount=96 .

The Saorview signal is only in HD for RTE 2. At the moment there is a simulcast until April 18th. If you do not have an HD box, you will get nothing.

Have you got a UHF aerial installed? If you have, a MPEG 4 HD box will work for you. Make sure it is MPEG 4 HD. Even with a SD set, it will down convert the signal and give amazing results.

These cards don't really work at all!

You need a seperate Set-box to convert an incompatible TV (SD downconversion on SCART and HD on HDMI). Compatible TVs are easily available, but some retailers have deliberately kept consumers in the Dark for nearly three years and have been dumping obsolete stock in Ireland without a disclaimer that the Digital on them will never work and the Analogue will stop working end of 2012.

RTE/RTE NL finalised the Spec in December 2008. The basics known at start of 2008, no change since February 2008. That's nearly three years ago. In reality any manufacturer/Importer paying attention would have realised by late 2006 that MPEG4, HD and MHEG5 (UK profile) fairly likely.

CEDA, Retailers etc warned by Government in 2008.

    via http://www.rte.ie/saorview/receiving.html
... the technical requirements for Irish digital terrestrial television (DTT) (now SAORVIEW) receivers were first published by the Department of Communications Energy and Natural Resources in February 2008. ...

... In December 2008 RTÉ published its Minimum Receiver Requirements. It subsequently appointed a company to test receivers for compliance with the these requirements and instigated an approval process for manufacturers. RTÉ did not add any further technical requirements beyond what was already required in the Department’s specification ...

... Key elements of the receiver specification include the following:

    1. The receiver needs to be capable of decoding both Standard Definition (SD) and High Definition (HD) MPEG 4 signals. This is important as RTÉ is planning to replace its current SD RTÉ Two service with an RTÉ Two HD service on SAORVIEW. More HD services are likely to follow in the future.

    2. The receiver needs to have MHEG5 middleware to decode RTÉ’s proposed new Digital Aertel Service and other possible interactive services. ...

There will be no wasteful simulcast of SD and HD like on older platforms such as Virgin, UPC, Sky, Freesat and Freeview as we don't have an existing Digital system.

Everything here http://www.saortv.info/news/ including side bar links to ALL the offical sites.
Why the Neotion or any other “CAM” solution can’t work

The PCMCIA (CI slot for a CAM on a TV or set-box) is for PayTV decoder which has a viewing card slot.
Usually an MPEG2 TV can’t see the MPEG4 channels if they are “flagged” properly, thus there is nothing for the converter that mimics a “CAM” to convert. If it’s an HD broadcast the MPEG2 bitrate is too high, so HD won’t ever work. Some Saorview channels will only be transmitted in HD.
The “Converter CAM” has to have an MPEG4 decoder and MPEG2 encoder so even if it did work, it reduces quality, adds delay and may run hot enough to damage the TV or set-box.

If you get rid of Sky (by cancelling) you keep the box and can get free UK TV, but you might think it worth getting a Freesat box that will make life easier for you as it will update the reception to cover changes.

You will not get RTE with Freesat or out of contract Sky, but if you get a Saorview box and a UHF aerial, you will get all Irish TV for free from that. If you TV has HDMI connectors, you will get HD.

And best of all, no subs - FREE for ever.
