Switching from Green Diesel to Kerosene - Tank

    Has anyone undertaken this.

I'm wondering if it is a summer job. Want to switch to facilitate boiler replacement in medium term and obtain savings in short term, as kerosene is getting up to €40 cheaper per 500 litres.

Tank is getting low and almost ready to re-order. I know I'll need an engineer with flue analyser to adjust the burner if I buy Kero.

Is it ok to just drain down tank through use - what about residual diesel - does it matter.

Even when empty tank is very heavy as I moved it before and two people barely enough to lift it to waist height, so wouldn't want to have to tip it over.

    Advice/Comments welcomed.

Run the diesel as low as possible then fill with kerosene.

As you mentioned, then get your service man to come and adjust the pressure to account for kero rather than diesel. Thats all thats to it.

Ideally you want to use up as much of the diesel as possible first.

If you can drain out as much as you can afterwards.
add a small amount of kerosen ( say 50-100 euro) initially and recommision burner for kerosen ( minor service/ replace nozzle etc).
Burn of mixer and then refill with kerosen allow for a return visit full service( to clean oil filter and replace nozzle etc).

If it an oldish tank, it may be worth changing it out altogether and have the base checked if it comply's with current regs.... lintels, adequate supports etc. ( Some insurance companys are asking for cert's should there be an issue with oil spillage/ tank damage).

Depending on how long the tank has been in use for diesel it will probably be filthy inside - diesel is not a clean fuel. This would be an ideal time to see about at least draining out the bottom of it to take out some of the crap.

Most kerosene boilers will work fine with some diesel through the kerosene but too much and, at the least, you'll have a lot of black smoke.

if its a plastic tank and your changing over its best to get it "washed out"also the line needs to be cleared of the green diesel
