A few weeks back my iphone 4 (which i had just gotten to the point i was happy with the setup) broke fell from a height and the screen cracked..also the camera stopped working..so after a few weeks it got worse to the point i couldn't see the screen...so i shipped it off to apple and the gave me advanced replacement..grand happy with the service except for one thing...they new iPhone came with 4.2.1 i am so pissed off right now like i gave them a phone with iOS 4.1 installed and got this back which is unjailbreakable at the moment well untethered anyway..i thought then that maybe just maybe it had been refurbished and had possibly been jailbroken before and there was SHSH blobs on Cydia for any other firmware but unfortunately not.. so now for the time being i'm stuck with a stock iPhone..the sooner unteathered jailbreak the better...

You're mad they fixed your phone?

It could be an entirely new phone because yours was beyond repair, or if they had to replace certain parts the OS may have needed to be re-installed. Obviously they're going to install the newest version. You have a working phone, stop complaining.

Tethering was needed back in the day, but why do you need a tethered iPhone?

Surely you can just be a happy that they gave you a new iPhone that isn't broken?

ya it is a new/different phone i got it advanced replacement they sent me it before i released my other phone don't get me wrong i am absolutely delighted to have my iPhone again and not and old Nokia that has served it's time again and again..i'm more upset that i cannot jailbreak it..well ya know what i mean i can but i don't want to have to keep a laptop with me at all times in case it needs a reboot..tho I paid for the replacement phone but it feels like it's locked..since my first generation ipod touch firmware 1.1.2 which came stock i've been jailbroken..I've never not been I've always been careful to stay in the jailbreakable firmwares

I don't need one i have to have a tethered jailbreak if i want to jailbreak now because i run windows and do not have SHSH blobs for 4.2b3 and you need a mac with those SHSH blobs for the current untethered jailbreak

but why do you need to jailbreak it? what functionality do you want/need?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,129 ✭✭✭kirving

So you dropped your phone, and got a new one from Apple(or whoever) for less than the original price and you're having a cry because they gave you the latest firmware?!

Maybe that old Nokia you were talking about with more open software might suit you better. Just wait for a jailbreak, it'll come...

SB settings..the ability to Use 3G for every app.. portable storage...not having to use itunes that much...just custom tweaks using Activator etc. 5 icon dock comes in handy infinifolders.. just little thins that make ur phone easier to navigate and adds functionality to it ,custom strings/ringtones/sms tones..not to mention install0us for those apps that apple will not let us irish have... last FM app for example that i use quite a bit.. i have quite a few playlists there...all my games for emulators that i have collected over the years..

i have the belief that you should be free to use your hardware in what ever way pleases you and without lawbreaking you are basically allowing apple to control what you can do with it

ya something to that affect..had to vent some steam and no it cost more than i paid for it to fix it..and i didn't drop it but i won't go into details there...but i know it will come but just can't wait to get back to normal

jeez man..just use the tethered jailbreak for the moment...it's not that big a deal..be happy you got a new phone replacement and instead of bitching at apple maybe you should thank them? What other company would replace your phone for you when you actually broke it?

Agreed....you dropped it and broke it, no like the phone just broke.

    You got a new one....

You have an iPhone, which has clearly been engineered to lock things away from the user in order to make it less breakable and more secure, but you want Apple to facilitate the ability for you to undo that core aspect of it? Sounds like you want to have your cake and eat it too.

If you want hardware that is to be used "in what ever way pleases you" and the iPhone does not please you in the form that it was designed in, it sounds like the iPhone is not for you. The iPhone was not designed to be tinkered with, that's hardly a secret.

That sounds pretty standard. Companies will always upgrade to the latest software as it reduces issues and is one less troubleshooting step to be gone through should you have another problem.

It's pretty naive to think Apple will pay any heed to the jailbreaking market.

I secretly think they do..and they allow some of the exploits to actually exist..
if your iphone couldn't be jailbroken how many people would actually buy it?
I probably wouldn't have as it doesn't do some stuff I want it to but when you include jailbreaking the iphone is pretty much a complete phone..once flash gets added back in :)

Given that any figures I've seen estimate that about 10% are jailbroken, that would mean that Apple would still have sold over 90% of the phones they have. Likely higher, as while a number of that 10% may have bought the phone to jailbreak it, I'd say most had already bought the phone, and decided to jailbreak it as an afterthought.

Well as far as hardware goes the iPhone is top very few if any other phones compare to it

You make a good point that it's not supposed to be tinkered with however from my experience iOS is Good as it is but its very generic which means its not half as good as it can be therefore jailbreaking and modifying to your own needs makes it better..and I never expected apple to allow this I know that's not going to happen..although microsoft made it publically clear that they will support homebrew development all be it unofficially at the moment on their win7 mobile phones and tablets it's a start apple should take a similar stance on the whole jailbreak issue..meaning that those who choose to modify can at their own risk as long as iOS is here there will be people who will find exploits to jailbreak it.

Ya I like Android especially the whole open source nature of it unfortunately the hardware that comes with it isn't as good as the iPhone..as a phone the iPhone is awesome and I've gotten to the stage now that I have quite a bit of knowledge in dealing with iOS especially after jailbreaking urbane don't really want to have to start all over again

Part of the goodness of the OS is its solidity, and a big part of that is codesigning, sandboxing, and cutting the user off from the OS's filesystem.

The problem with Apple supporting jailbreaking is that they would then be responsible for the consequences when the inevitable security blunders, crashes and other weaknesses inevitably occur. They haven't been facilitating jailbreaking, but you'll notice that they haven't been fighting it all that hard either... http://daringfireball.net/linked/2010/08/30/gibbs

Your acknowledgement that people who jailbreak should be able to do so "but at their own risk" shows that you don't really have a right to complain when things don't go your way :)
