i have a 03 toyota avensis verso 2.0 D4D with 160k on the clock, the turbo went a few months ago which had to be replaced (E1200) ,a week ago while driving with a full load, the car lost power and eventually died altogether, now my mechanic is saying engine must be replaced. does anyone know if the avensis verso has the same diesel engine as the avensis car and where one can be bought second hand for a reasonable cost. I want it fixed so i can flog it..

Did he say why it needed a new engine? What has failed?

im not sure, originally it was thought to be a fuel injector which he replaced, it worked for 1/2 an hour then started knocking and died again.. he just said it was knackered, i dont know a lot about mechanics so i didnt ask Q's

Might be well worth your while getting a second opinion on this. Mechanics liker other professions get things wrong too. Could be something relatively simple too. I'd be eager to find out the reason for needing a new engine if I were you...

Surely its not worth putting more money into it at this stage?

No offense pal, but sounds like hes talkin **** did you ever consider that it might be the pump? Engine just died and now its ****ed? doesn't sound plausible to me!
If the timing belt went or head gasket yeah (but you would know if it was something like this as the engine doesn't just go quietly into the night if you know what i mean)
the fact that you got it going again is a sign that its probably not knackered.?

Def get it out of there and get a second opinion. Has anyone even done a diagnostic on it?

As far as I know, these engines have swirl flaps.

If an engine injested one of these, it writes off the engine.
