have you tried to install xp again?

put your drive into a caddy and access it with another computer, do a check on it, and format it..?

Are you booting off the xp disk to attempt an OS re-install?

i put in the xp disc, press the option to install xp and then the next message that comes on is that it is examining the disk and it stays at that. for hours.

try booting from a linux liveCD. Just to see if it works, and also so that you can take off any files you need.

Don't know if it is the same fault but i just fixed my neighbours that was doing the same thing.
I was able to boot into safe mode and ran malware bytes, this cured it.
Seemed it was a virus that had disabled AVG.

    Worth a try.

I've had this... its malware on the MBR.

what you need to do is boot off your installation disc, go into repair mode and run this command:

    bootsect /nt60 X: /force /mbr” where X is the drive letter

    nt52 for xp
    nt60 for vista/7

then reboot into safe mode with networking install an updated intel matrix storage driver to replace iaStor.sys and then run Malwarebytes anti-malware.

once its done reboot and run Malware bytes again in noramal mode to make sure its clean.

i had it last week on windows 7 enterprise and the above steps fixed it...

    hope this helps...

thanks. but like i said in an earlier post it wont boot off the disc. gives me the option to repair or install but when i click either it just hangs

do you have the option to put the disk into a desktop PC as a slave?
this may be your only way out without replacing the disk....
