hi folks i'm looking for a rear derailleur for a 6 speed peugeot (with friction shifters) but i'm not sure which one to get most are 10,9 or 7/8 speed but does this make a difference
my local bike shop has said they cant get one so it's an internet search
any advice is greatly appreciated btw i'm only a hobby rider who may do a few charity rides but i'm aiming to do the dublin-belfast maracycle
    tyhanks in advance

6 Speed, that goes back a while, being a Peugeot it probably originally had a Simplex Prestige.

You would probably be better off picking up a retro dérailleur as the jockey wheels in the newer mechs would have a different pitch.

i'm getting a new crank ,b.b. and chain so i'd better get a new deraileur plus a vintage one is hard to come by i'm not convinced of the reliability of an old one.
i read somewhere in my search that a shimano sora was fitted to i peugeot but i cant find the article again, could this work

    Rothar.ie

There's loads of simplex and sachs rear derailleurs in a box and some in fine working condition, very good value too.

edit. re: new sora derailleur, no reason that I know of sora would fit and not another modern (bolt-on) derailleur, just depends if it has a derailleur hanger or not, if it doesn't a new bolt-on derailleur is still fittable but you need a doofer, a little hanger that goes into the dropout and is fixed in with a half-moon bolt.

I don't think you need to worry too much about which derailleur you use since friction shifters tend to work at least fairly well with anything.
If you're changing the crankset, bb, chain and derailleur would you not consider also upgrading to 9 or 10 speed while you're at it?
Admittedly you'd probably need a new rear hub but it's a more useful upgrade than a new derailleur (especially with friction shifters).

I wouldn't recommend an upgrade to 9 or 10 speed rear sprocket, apart from trying to confuse the guy with all the extra gears, all this new technology is rubbish particularly for a bread and butter racer. ie the components wear out much quicker than retro, they are also far more complex to operate and also maintain. Also more importantly fitting a wider sprocket will involve rear wheel dishing, which could open up a can of maggots if the spoke nipples are frozen.

I've a Shimano 600 derailer at home in the shed that'd prob suit the bike. It came off a 6 speed Viking. Its in fair condition. I think it'd suit what you're looking for. You're welcome to it if you think it'd work and are willing to pay postage. Its not very pretty but it'll get you out of a rut.

If you get a rear hanger you can use whichever derailleur you fancy. On my old Dawes with the hanger below fitted I have a Tiagra derailleur.
