If you are going to get a Golf then go for the 1.6 litre. The 1.4 litre only has 75 or 80bhp and is far from a reliable engine. Astra has 90bhp.

I would also add a Focus 1.6 litre to that list, better than the above 2 imo.

cheers for reply!see i do quite alot of driving with work and dont wanna be crippled with fuel as i get small expenses but not alot hence wanting the smaller engine! I just think the focus are a much uglier car than either of those 2 no?

Focus 1.6. Ghia spec. Great engine.

If not, Astra all day long

Don't assume small engine = better mpg. It's not always that simple.

I wouldn't touch the 1.4 golf. I have the same engine in my Polo and it's not what i'd consider easy on petrol.

I'd go with the focus 1.6 first and the Astra second.

Avoid the Golf OP, it's a bucket of crap with a heavy skim of engine oil on top.

first diesel golf that came up on donedeal

jeez that Golf is good value!kinda leaning towards the 1.4 astra sxi now i think! anyone know what they're like to drive or fuel consumption?

    A 1.4 is a complete false economy.

100 euro less in tax for misery every time you want to overtake.

A 1.4 Astra is doing around 4,000 rpm in fith gear at 130 kph - that means it's guzzling fuel down on a motorway as well as making you deaf and driving you mad - listening to a four cylinder engine droning away at 4,000 rpm gets very wearisome very quickly.

A little engine will be woefully underpowered on a dual carriageway or motorway, meaning that it will be using more fuel than a larger engine, which has an easier life.

Buy a 1.6 at least OP.
