With the new commercial vehicle type rules the new commercial 4x4 sector is looking pretty slim

we still have crewcab pickups l200, hilux, d-max and ranger

but we lost the sorento, X5 , range rover, ML270/320, Landcruiser and other commercial vehicles

also interestingly enough, with the crewcab vrt change the hilux which was once a lot more expensive is now in around the same price as the l200/d-max

look at the toyota , merc , kia etc websites, the vehicles arent even listed int he commercial section. It was an EU change that meant factory goods vehicles (small vans and crewcabs) not jeeps that were converted in the uk or here got the N1 catagory which is 13.3% vrt, commercial landcruisers, x5's etc would now attract the full VRT rate as their not commercial from the factory , so theyd end up being the same price as their passenger counterparts , and thus are no longer worth producing... , the 50 euro VRT band is now 200 euro and only applies to large vans like lwb transits.. , things have just got expensive again

Land Rover are now supplying Discovery commercials for Ireland from the factory (they always have built them, don't why they were not supplied here before). They would never build commercial Range Rovers these days (last were in the early 90s), doesn't suit the image.

tbh i dont think commercial range rovers are viable at all anyway, its 100% obvious theyre not for work use . good to know the disco is still available though , although I think the disco 4 looks shíte, i still love the old discovery 2 look

no , first off there are no more after factory conversions allowed for vrt reduction , youd pay 36% on it , 2ndly its now 200 euro vrt , 3rdly even if it was commercial from the factory it would be 13.3% vrt

Bit of an acquired taste, looks ok in the right colour.

Few manufacturers are going to produce specials for certain strange markets (Ireland isn't the only one with funny rules). Land Rover are an exception as they've always had a Special Vehicles Operation. Unless Toyota bring in some of their ROW poverty spec vehicles you aren't going to get much choice other than pick-ups.

i dont really mind, the hilux and the d-max are roughly the same price now so I may be able to trade in my d-max jan 2012 and not take too much of a hit swapping to a hilux , pickups have come a long way and are a lot more comfortable these days, volkswagen brought in the amarok so well see how german pickups fair out , if every builder hadnt bought a commercial range rover and swanned around in it this wouldnt be happening, atleast I now have a story that can start with 'in my day' and end with 'converted a sorento to evade vrt'

i very much doubt any builder ever bought a commercial rangie.far to much of a posers plastic soft city car.

Used to amaze me the number of people who asked on here in the past about destroying comercializing a Range Rover Sport or X5

everyone was doing it man , people were comercialising every 4x4 they could find , lots of threads here about it, back before 2003 people converted landcruiser amazons to crewcabs - smart plan back then , the goverment are tightening up because of the amount of people driving round in them with no business

so your saying that a second hand landcruiser is under commercial tax any more if your a farmer:mad::mad:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,884 ✭✭✭101sean

No, new commercials have to be factory built, not passenger conversions (assume you missed not from your post)

Existing commercials are safe if you can continue to prove they are for commercial use (depending on how your local council interprets the rules)

I wouldn't call the 78 series poverty spec.
Maybe we will see some more practical versions. Like the trayback 78's the only problem I see is engine size they are nearly all the 1VD-FTV 4.5 V8 units now.

you can have any feckin jeep you want as a commercial, as long as you can prove it's for work purposes and will sign a decalration that you'll only use it for that. The only real difference now is that they want to start cracking down on people having commercial tax and never doing one single second of commercial activity with it. There's no new law that says an x5 or similar can't be taxed as a commercial vehicle, it's just that now you're more likely to get into trouble of you do it to avoid tax.

It's a load of balls anyway, they way the rules are written, if i'm driving home and stop to get a litre of milk for the breakfast they could try have a go over that, which is stupid

Going by the number of them around, it wouldn't surprise me if the likes of Mitsubishi & Toyota started factory-production of the commercial 4x4's due to their popularity over here. I worked in a Toyota dealer's many years ago (before the boom) and the amount of commercial LandCruisers they sold was simply staggering. If Toyota keep producing them, then you can be sure they'll sell. Don't Mitsubishi already supply a 4Work variant of the Shogun in the UK too?

As for the X5's, RangeRover Sports and Audi Q7's - no-one has the money for them anymore, regardless of whether they're commercial or passenger.

The new Landcruiser is coming in Commercial from factory. The likes of an X5 or RR can still be comercialised but instead of attracting VRT rate of €50 they will now attract a rate of 13.3% VRT.

I don't think so, If I understand it the Govt are now using the EU type approval as the basis for commercials. So if it doesn't come from the factory as a commercial it can't be taxed as commercial.
    Thats my understanding anyway.

There's a new Land Rover Discovery 4 2 seat Commercial arriving into the Irish market this month (April 2012). It will cost from €46,000 inc VAT & VRT. Due to demand it will be possible to order factory options with this model, including Navigation.

And yes, it is coming direct from Solihull as a van instead of being converted by NVD at Rosslare. Same as the current 5 seat N1 Utility is.
