How much should i pay?

    Hello

My friend is selling his 2003 Toyota Yaris. The mileage on it at the moment is 70000 miles. He is a good friend of mine so he wont say a price. He wants me to come up with a price. I dont know **** about cars.

So, i was wondering if you guys could let me know how much i should offer for his car? Its a decent car (for its mileage !). The NCT is not due untill June and the tyres seem to be ok. THe tax has been paid for this year. He told me that the car is due for routine service (the one that you do every 10000 miles).

so what do you all think? What would be a good price for the car?

a routine service for a yaris would cost probably about 150 euro from an independent garage. anywhere between 3 and 4 thousand for the car depending on condition. a few pictures might be more helpful.

Go somewhere else. Never, ever buy/sell cars with friends/family, it can very easily start to turn downhill if things go wrong with the car!

I wouldn't buy a car off a friend or family, it gets messy when/if things go wrong. And not giving you a price is fairly crappy imo.

    Politely decline and look elsewhere.

I disagree. The OP could get a decent car for a below average price, on a car that he knows, probably knows of any major issues it's had etc and is aware of how his/her friend has treated it.

There should be no issues so long as the OP is willing to accept that cars break and if it happens to break the day after buying it it's the OP's problem to fix and no one else's.

    It's a Yaris, it won't go wrong.

@OP, I'd deal with the friend on the car, on two conditions:
1- insist they name a price first. If they have unreal (high) expectations, then you can decline without insulting them with a precieved low offer. If they ask a low price, it's in your favour. If they ask the amount that the car is worth then all is fair anyway.
2 - get a mechanic to check it. There may be something wrong that they don't know about or don't consider relevant. For example, it may have been previously crashed but they might not know, or the clutch (for example) could be starting to go but they might not have noticed. If it's okay when you buy it, chances are it will not develop any issue in 3-6 mths, which is all you would get as a warranty from a dealer anyway.

Re price, very hard to say without further info / seeing the car, but a good one would be worth 3000-3500 on a private sale.

Start the ball rolling by offering 2000 "cash today now in my hand "

If they are insulted tell them you'd pay more to a dealer for one with a warranty and needing no work.

I dare you to show me undisputable evidence, that no toyota yaris, ever, in the world, has ever broken down since production started.

Otherwise, shove your 'it's a yaris' stuff and accept the fact that it's just another car, and while it may be less prone to falling apart than a renault is, it's still possible.

Thanks for the reply guys. Personally, i hate buying stuff of familly and friends but i kind of slipped into this situation owing to some bad judgement calls.

Anyways, i talked with this friend of mine and we are going to take the car to a garage and ask the mechanic to put a price on the car.

If it comes to a situation where i am forced to start with the price, i am thinking of offering 2500 first and work my way up till 3000 euros. I will be more than happy if i get the car for 2750. As it turns out, i will have to pay an insurance of 1600 euros (3rd party) on top of the price of the car. Yea i am on a provisional and i am 24.

I know i dont have any pics, sorry about that. He hasnt advertised it anywhere as well. The color's silver and the engine is 1.0. But 2750 euros, Do you all think its too low?

i put 50k on my last one. changed the oil a few times, the plugs and tyres once or twice, one set of pads, a few bulbs and wipers.... didnt try too hard on the maintainance, nothing ever broke. ever. have a t-sport now, 10k done, zero problems.

like you said, its not that they dont break, but the likelyhood is very slim

2750 is a fair price as it will need to be serviced and Nct'd in june.
