Removing silicone oil from magazines

In a bout of ill-informed enthusiasm some time back, I squirted silicone oil into all my magazines. This hasn't had any serious detrimental effect on any of them except that my MP7 is acting weird, dribbling the first 20 or 30 rounds of each magazine out before getting its act together. I've been told this might be due to oil in the mag, although I'm at a loss to figure out why it'd cause that. Nevertheless, the MP7 is a temperamental little beastie and I'd like to clean out the mags to leave them as nature intended.

I was told alcohol might do the job. Any other suggestions? White spirits, or turpentine, or meths, or washing-up liquid or industrial degreaser?

Iso Propol, classic stuff! Any non water based alcohol cleaner.

Many of them are used for cleaning flat screen TV's - should evaporate fairly rapidly out of its container. Thats how you know its the good stuff :D

What is happening is, oil is getting on the bb's that are in the mag. Then the oil from the bb's is getting into the hop up in turn making it not work for a few shots till the oil wears off.

Solution: Take mags apart and wash in warm water. Same can be done to hop up if needs be. Make sure you dry the mags after the dunkin' ;)

Was down this road my self when i put silicone in ak mags (i was a noob :o )

Generally putting silicone oil in mags is a bad idea. It just gives dirt something to stick to :)

    Hope that helps :):)

If the problem is the mag not feeding right then you've probably got some gunk in there somewhere interfering with the spring smooth travel more than the oil causing a problem.

Shane if you can split the MP7 mags apart just give the insides a wipe with some tissue (kitchen paper or bog roll will do the trick) so they are clean and dry. I wouldn't bother with alcohol as its not going to clean anything unless you flush the mags with it and it may react with the plastic.

Now if you can't split the mags but the springs will come out (like MAG brand M4 mids) try and get a thread onto the spring before you remove it and tie some tissue paper to the thread and as you pull the spring out the tissue should be dragged through the bb tube cleaning as it goes. depending on how bad it is you may have to repeat it. Thats what works for me when I clean mine.

    Hey Shane

Is your MP7 the AEG version or a GBB version?

Just to mention if it is the GBB version, the silicone can get onto the hop rubber and it absorbs into it. The hop rubber will more than likely have to be replaced.
The GBB MP7 hop rubbers are a lot more sensitive to silicone.

You are an experienced man Shane so I hesitate to ask, but have you changed your brand of BBs recently? My MP7 is the most tempermental gun I have about the types of BB going through it.

+1 on that. My MP7 does not like ICS bb's but is ok with G&G, Excel and King Arms.

I don't think this is it, really - it's only the first 20% or so BBs out of each mag that do it, then it's plain sailing. Those BBs have been the least deep into the mag, and every other BB needs to pass the same place they were twice (once on the way in, once on the way out) so if that were the case it'd just get worse.

This is it's all 6 mags exactly the same.

Indeed I can't split them, they're actually MAG brand too. There's a plug at the top where presumably the spring curls back to - any idea how to get that plug out?

AEG, sorry, I should have specified. Tokyo Marui.

I think I've tried it with all the BBs I have at the moment, which includes G&Gs which I know have been fine in it in the past, and some Swedish leftovers which I think were working fine in it at Berget. I guess it's worth checking again to be sure though.

The idea to clean the mags out of silicone oil came from the techie guy from Quality Airsoft Supplies by the way, and he knows his stuff well but only saw what the gun was doing while trying to cover his back and heard a brief version of the history of the problem. Worth pursuing anyway, I reckon.

Hmmmm..... Just had a look at some photos of MAG MP7 mags, not sure about popping that plug out. The M4 ones aren't too bad as they just screw off. You could try and pry one off, but you may wreck the mag.
