Budget Honeymoon ideas

Myself and my partner are getting married in August of this year. We have a tight budget for the wedding and an even tighter one for the honeymoon. We would like to go on our honeymoon outside of ireland. Does anyone have any ideas for a honeymoon that wont break the bank but still would be enjoyable and value for money?

We were looking to go somewhere for a week

    Thanks :)

Croatia is beautiful, and very reasonable outside of Dubrovnik. Weather in August will be roasting :)

Hiya, I hate hate HATE flying, so wanted to stay in Europe (one flight) and like you we had a limited budget. We ended up going to fuertaventura. We got our flights and a 3 bed villa with an outdoor heated pool and jacuzzi on the roof for about 1300 in october.

We had a lovely time. Very very relaxing. Weather was fab. I don't know what it would be like in August, you'll be there in the height of holiday season, so may not be as relaxing.

You'd have nice weather in France at that timeof year. You can fly to carcassonne with ryanair for as little as €60 return! I say carcassonne as it was my favourite part of south of france, it's a medieval walled town, surrounded by a new modern town. So beautiful and quaint inside, and modern outside! You'd get a flight to cannes or nice for a similar price. You could fly to paris for 3 nights, then take the train down through france (it takes a few hours but you get to see some beautiful sights and its pretty relaxing). Then spend 4 nights in cannes and fly back from there. If you book early enough the hotels should be reasonable enough.

Something a little bit different might be to go to morocco. Prices seem pretty reasonable. You could even just go to gibraltar or southern spain and take a day or overnight trip. You can see morocco from gib and takes a short while on a ferry to get over.

You could also look at taking a cruise. Prices are very low at the moment and considering it includes all of your food (all you can eat) it works out really well.

Something else which could be a bit different, is one of the less visited canary islands. La Gomera looks like a paradise! It's supposed to be very very quiet, but perfect for long romantic strolls in the forrest. I wouldn't recommend it if you're hoping for a very active night life though. You could do a few days on one of the larger ones then a night or 2 in your secluded paradise.

Italy is amazing... anywhere in Italy but mainly Tuscany I guess... you could hire your own cottage or something!

Or if you mean somewhere cheaper... what about somewhere like Devon... there are some amazing beach bungalows that we stayed in before (for easter week was only £360 for 6 people. There are smaller ones too so you could get for two people. But the area is beautiful and very romantic... reminds me of Clare a bit... or you could just go to Clare :D

Italy is an expensive destination. I've been there twice on holidays and both times I'm shocked by how expensive it is for accomodation and eating out. Contrary to popular belief, the food wasn't really up to much at all and was your bog standard tourist stuff. Car hire cost us €900 for two weeks! We were there this year and got a lovely studio apartment at a fantastic rate and cooked for ourselves 4 out of 7 evenings and had breakfast there every morning but do you really want to be doing this on your honeymoon? Surely, even if you're on a budget, you want to feel like you've a bit of money to spend.

Perhaps one thing I'd recommend for Italy is staying in an agritourismo all inclusive place. They're usually in the country and you get half board and when we looked it up it cost about €600 per person. You could then decide to head off by yourselves some evenings and eat out if you wanted to. The food in the agritourismo places would definitely be of a higher quality too as its locally grown and most times organic.

Croatia is really lovely and we flew to Zadar and stayed in an apartment about 5km outside the town in a little village on the coast. It was quite a cheap holiday really, our money went far, and we ate out most nights and went to an island for an overnight. Lots and lots of fish and seafood so I was in heaven. We managed quite well using public transport and didn't need a car at all.

I'd agree with How Strange. Italy is a very expensive destination. If you're looking at the south and you're located anywhere near a touristic/historic/beach location, you'll get the feeling that you're being really ripped off. Funnily enough the locals all complain too about rampant price inflation since the introduction of the euro.

Croatia is a great alternative, especially the north and islands, more so than Dubrovnik. Similar in many respects to Italy in terms of landscape, coastline, food, historic sites - with even some pockets of villages where Italian is spoken! But less spoiled, much better value for accommodation/food/wine/tours, and you get the impression that they are genuinely trying to build their tourist industry rather than rip people off. The only downside is that some of the nicer parts of Croatia are difficult to get to by car.

The isle of man is the cheapest I can think of. You must be going just for the sake of going if you aren't really sure of where you want to go with your budget.

I guess it depends where in Italy you go. I was in Lake Garda this summer and was surprised at how little money I spent (but I wasn't drinking much). Rome I found really expensive and a bit soulless. But Tuscany... I found reasonable and the food is out of this world (not so much in the other places). The scenery is amazing too... I was based in Pisa and did Florence, Lucca, Siena, Torre del Lago, San Gimignano and just fell in love with the place and the people.

We were looking around on the internet and we thought of Prague, i know its a hot spot for stag parties but it has loads of stuff to see and id prefer a honeymoon/holiday where im not just lazing on the beach :)

Anyone have any experience of Prague?

Good or bad, all feedback welcome :)

My brother went on honeymoon to Slovenia, part in Ljubljana, part at Lake Bled, though he said they’d prefer to have stayed longer at Lake Bled. I’ve never been there myself, but heard it was fabulous. I don’t think Slovenia would be one of the cheaper parts of Eastern Europe, but cheaper than Italy I’m sure.

We too are getting married in Aug this year and working on a close budget. He would love to go back to New York and I would like to stay in Europe..we have priced 5 days in New York and 5 days in Benalmadena(Spain) and it comes in at just over our budget at €2150...

We have been to benalmadena last year and loved it! Flgihts were very reasonable and we also got a private appartment from ownersdirect.co.uk ...one week for two adults and one toddlers worked out at €600 including flights. The place was brilliant ...really really enjoyed it...lots to do and see...fab restaurants...train in the airport all the way down the coast so all other towns are easy to get to...large markets that go on for MILES! Day trips to Gibraltar....the marina is so so beautiful...beach is fab...Really would like to go back again

We've been to Prague for a romantic week away and we loved it: its not too expensive and there is so much to do. I'd go back in a shot. Just make sure you stay somewhere close to the centre of Prague.

There are so many museums and different things to see and do.. I'd go for it!

Turkey ... its fantastic beautiful great food great weather and so cheap once you are there ... what is your budget ? There is always a weekend in Paris ?

Im not exactly sure of the budget as we are still trying to figure out the final cost of the wedding, but we have decided on Prague. Have been researching and it seems great value for money with the apartments/hotels and flights. Looks like a lovely place to go sightseeing too! We were in Turkey last year as DF's mum has an apartment over there. I have to say, I love Turkey, the people are lovely and while we were there for a week i wish it was longer, although i was pregnant at the time and wasnt able to stay out in the pubs or do too much. But we will definately go back again...

i spent some time at Lake Bled a few years ago and it was really beautiful. we found the local people extremely friendly and helpful. we stayed in a self-catering appartment (a Soba), which was really beautiful and really cheap, with amazing views.

eating out and drinks were crazily cheap (it was approx €1 for a litre of beer) :D
