How do you post things?

    Hey,
I'm looking into posting things. I'm selling some ds games on ebay, and I would like to know how to post them. First of all, there are 4 of them. I want to post them together. In total they weight under 1kg. So what do I do with them? Do I package them, write on the address (typo fixed haha) of the place they are going to, and then what? I live in Swords, and there is an An Post in the pavilions. So do I bring the package there? Say they are goin to the US. Do I have to write the price of the contents or anything?
Any help would be appreciated, as I have no clue what I'm doing. :D

I would always package them together, wrap them in bubble wrap first, then brown paper. if you have a scales at home try get it under 500g, makes a big difference in cost (€4.85 vs €10.40), remove any sheets of paper inside the box bar the manual (eg. epilepsy warning, nintendo advertising, etc)

I assume that "email address" bit was a mistake

you put their postal address on the front,

then your address and contents (doesnt have to be too specifc, ie computer games) on the side or back in smaller writing

for outside the EU there's a little customs sticker you have to put on it (you'll get this at the post office), again saying what's in it and also declaring a value

and when you get ot the post office, make sure to ask for standard post, any other method costs an arm and a leg

    hope this helps :D

Also ask for proof of postage, which is free

Don't sell any further than the UK and Ireland, use registered post with appropriate insurance, and get a proof of postage too (with reg no and address shown). Anything else is a risk to you.

Don't forget an airmail sticker and a fragile sticker if applicable. Really the post office counter is the best place for this sort of enquiry. Only sell to countries with reliable postal services e.g not Spain, Italy, Eastern Europe, South America, India, Africa and indeed most of the world outside North America, Western Europe, Australia and NZ. Always go OTT with packaging and assume the worst possible treatment of your consignment. :)

Thanks for the answers. So, do I just bring it to the post office (An Post), or do I put in in a post box? And do I get the stamps in the post office?
    Thanks

You should be able to buy a stamp in your local shop, but make sure you stick it on the outside of the package .

You do not put the stamp in the post box .

It's best if you bring the stamp to the post office and ask them to post the letter for you.

Don't worry about the queue , when they see you coming , they will give you preferential treatment .

    Doing the same my self.
I will be sending my items registered post. So they will need to sign for it at their end. But by getting proof of postage at my local post office. will i be then covered if their is a dispute saying they never got the item ?

At the moment i have a guy with 0 feedback winning a good few of my auctions.

depends on where they are from, certain countries like italy are very high risk
you can change settings to block bidders with no feedback, or just state it in hte description that you will cancel bids from anyone without feedback

Prrof of postage means nothing.. in the event of a dispute you must prove the buyer RECEIVED the item, not that you sent it.

So what stamps do I get? Do An Post not have stamps? Do I have to get a certain type of stamp? For shipping to Europe or US what stamps do I need, and around how much are they?
Thanks again for the answeres guys.

Stamps are old school, just go to your post office and they'll sort you out with the appropriate postage label

Most people may think this sort of information is pretty common knowledge but I have just spent the evening trying to explain to my brother how to post a parcel.

    Must be the generation gap....

Anyway this link is really handy for calc.

    http://postage.anpost.ie/

ust answer all the questions than chose get rates at the last page.

An post rates, but it is much easier to just hand in the parcel and pay the amount they ask for. Also ime, the staff will pick up on any mistakes you have made like missing letter in Post code etc.

Is this real? Seriously, because it's starting to look like a joke now. I can't believe that there is a person that doesn't know where to buy stamps.

Thanks everyone, all of your input is extremely helpful to me. So would this be okay? (Please correct anything that I should/shouldn't do?): I package my items up; first bubblewrap them, then put them in a large packet. My name and address is on the back of the package, with an extra piece of info saying ''Video Games''. Do I have to declare a value? On the front is the address I'm shipping to. If it is international , I ask for a customs sticker?
When I get to the PO, I ask them to weight it. Then tell them I want standard post/registered, and I pay the fee of however much it is. They then stick the postage label on it? I also ask for proof of postage. I then ask them if they can post it.
    Is that it?
Also, on the An Post website, for a packet, what is the maximum depth of the package? I.e. the thickness? Because I think the nintendo ds box is bigger than 2.5cm. Also, if it is over 2.5cm, will I have to class it as a parcel and pay extra?
    Cheers guys:D

That's pretty much it, though you don't have to ask them to post it. When you hand it over and give them money, they won't give it back. They'll tell you anything you're missing. If you don't declare a value, then you may not be able to claim on the insurance if it goes missing. A customs declaration will only be needed if sending outside the EU (not a good idea, far too expensive to be worth while).

    Yes it is.
I do know where to buy stamps. I just don't know how much in value/what type of stamps I would need (If I used stamps) for an international package. So excuse my limited knowledge of the postal system, because I have never used it before. Thus, I asked here.
Okay, It's clear enough to me now. Thank you all very much!

More like the dumbing down of the a large portion of the population due to the internet and other hi technology items. Anybody who has seen the Disney Pixar movie Wall E will see where we're heading - human beings who lose the use the of their limbs and eventually their capacity to think for themselves. How hard is it to wrap a parcel and walk to the Post Office - that's what legs are for and that's what the post office is there for. The OP obviously did not watch, or understand, the Monty Python video or they would not still be posting here.
