    Is it just me or do the catholic church and Irish athletics always seem to go hand in hand? And is it unusual that despite where we are there is no track at the back of St Pats... or anywhere for that matter? I mean, (http://www.metroeireann.com/article/the-sports-interview-the-running,242) Would Fr. Liam approve? I mean, here's a man who managed to drag Coghlan, Treacy, Ovett, Walker, Wessinghage and Scott to a hill in Tullylease with a gravel track which he had built; raising the money by running 150 (37.28 miles) laps of an outdoor track and with a concert by the Wolfe Tones. He still maintains his record of never missing a World Athletics Championship. Athletics mad it seems!
    Not only this but my first experience of Athletics was in a CBS by men who were religious and quite a few heavily addicted to Athletics? Does anyone else have any similar experience? It seems to me the oddest thing not to be able to walk to the back of St. Pats and see 3 or 4 individuals sweating on a Gravel track? It wouldn't even look out of place. It would be a perfect aesthetic, cheap and useful!

    Does anyone else agree with me here? It does seem a tad silly to me!

    Edit: And taking the example of NUIM's swimmers. Who have it all against them yet and still very much class acts. It took one very well organised individual and a team of quality swimmers and we break an Irish universities record for the 4 x 100m Free relay! Swimming was set up 2-3 years ago and we don't even have a proper pool! 20 yards of pool for Christ sake.
    Why couldn't we do the same for Athletics? It seems very very silly. That this whole sport is left out of this University.

    Well to be fair to the swimmers (At least the ones on the scholarship), they go to the national aquatics centre on a bus almost every morning to train...

    If an athletics team was to be formed, it could surely train off-campus. (I think there's a running track near Lexlip)
    The idea of a running track isn't a bad one, but I really see no benefit in the idea of building one just because it would be nice to have one.

    Lets get competitive Athletics going first before we spend money on a track.

    There actually is an Athletics Club on Campus and caters for all students represented by MSU (and the Staff of the Universitys too). From what I remember about them they are primarily a Road Running Club. Indeed every year our University holds a big national Road Running Competition. If you would like to join them their email address is athletics[AT]nuimsu.com.

    It would be highly unlikely that we could have such a track on the South Campus however as all that land is owned by St Pats and they're not a massive fan of such developments on their land.

    Also just a couple of FYIs cos Im feeling very pedantic in my procrastinating state;

    It took a bit more than one individual and his team, the whole scholarship infrastructure with its coaches and support staff is what brought swimming to the fore. The Swimming School that runs lessons for Adults and Children funds much of this. If you can think of a similar Business Model for Athletics then Im sure people would be interested.

    Finally all clubs that are on campus are run by Students or members of the university staff - they are not run by the University per se. So really if you want to see more from the Athletics Club then really its up to you!! Im sure the Clubs Officer of the SU or the NUIM Sports Officer would point you in the right direction if youd like to do more!
