Hello, to cut a long story short some little f**ker has robbed my phone and has started going through my files etc. They have also began a slander campaign where they are telling people about private files that I had on my phone. I have checked the account history and no calls or SMSs have been made from the phone scince it was robbed. I am wondering is there any possible way that I could wipe the phone clean without being in contact with it, or track it and find where it is. ?
    Thank you..

Unless you set this up in advance (like you can with an iPhone). I don't think you have a hope. What type of phone is it?

The Gardai would probably have the means to trace it to a general location, but as there is no serious crime involved - they won't be interested.

You should change all your online passwords immediatly if you have not done so already.

Call your provider, tell them the phone was stolen. This will disable from working on Irish networks (eventually) but if there's any data stored on it - this will still be accessible.

if gmail was one of your signed in accounts, you can log it out from the web. Just sign into gmail on your pc and at the bottom of the screen it will say "Last account activity: " - Click on details link beside it and in the pop up window click "sign out all other sessions". Not sure of this kind of option on any other services but it can be handy on gmail - even if you left it logged in at work or something like that.

how do you know about the slander? Is it posted online somewhere?

If so, then the poster identity would be useful in identifying the person that stole your phone. ie: identifying the poster could lead to the capture of someone guilty of theft. Report it to the gardai and send an email to the owner of the website the posts are being made on.

Theft of the phone is one thing, making the data contained therein public is another:

if untrue allegations are being made then its slander
if personal information is being presented then its a breach of personal privacy which is an implied constitutional right and was recently considered by the European Council for Human Rights (2008 I think)
Accessing any system using your password is computer misuse (hacking)

any of the above is more serious that the theft of the phone itself and might get more attention from the gardai who may then send a demand fo rthe IP address holder's identity to the ISP (assuming you can get the IP address from the site with the messages or the gardai may be able to request that as well).

it all really hinges on how the slander campaign is being run.
