Do NOT hit the preview button

Just some table pointers to be posted out of thread to help those going mad elsewhere:
1Click 'Quote' button to create new post
2Delete the (/quote) at the very end of your post
3Delete the square brackets around the (quote) at the beginning of your post
4Find your name and mileage, cut it, and paste it in again at the right location making sure to change it to your new mileage
    5Bold it
6Submit your post - and make sure no-one else has posted an update between the post you're quoting and your own post. If they have, edit your table to include their changes

But also DO NOT hit the preview button when posting a thread with a table in it. The table will not show up correctly in the preview mode.

I also think that preview mode may be responsible for messing up other table containing threads totally that we've seen before.

I still think tables are a square peg for a round hole, but meh!

Is it possible to get the table to auto sort like it did in the "best of 2010",
then we could find our name cut and paste in as the last field with the new mileage

The auto sort feature only works on the version of the table that you actually see displayed in the thread. Once you quote the post for editing it the names will be in the order of the actual code as it was posted previously.

Deleted - Tried to post a table that didn't work.

No need to do that if the table is sorted. I've done that with the subscribed.gif2010 - how far did you run? Table. Just add "sort=3d" to the Table header code (Might be 4d, with the autonum col included - have to check.) I'll do it with the 2011 1k challenge next time I'm updating mine. All anyone'll have to do then is find their own line and change the mileage.

I frequently forget that...and to unbold the previous one. :o

    Btw.....I like tables! ........nerd!!

it's not just preview that messes it up. If you go back to edit the post it also gets messed up. I just posted my own and it was fine but then noticed that the poster before me had missed out redgraffles update so I tried editing to put rg back in and it fooked the whole table up.

It doesn't actually mess it up, if you refresh the page after editing, it displays it as a table instead of normal.

That's right I've edited the table a few times. Be patient. don't touch anything, refresh and the table comes back!

Ohhhhh :o I usually just delete asap thinking I've messed up.

It would just kill the thread! And the table looks cool . . .we all get a sense of superiority knowing we can successfully edit a table, compared to the thousands of boards users who cant . .:P

Whereas I see the tables as killing the threads.

I think there is something in one of the edit modes that does completely screw up the table in your post you're editing and the rest of the thread as well. We had something like that happen to a thread last year but I never did track down the exact cause, well not before I got too bored of too many tables anyway. ;)

The tables have been driving me so crazy in the last year I rarely join challenge threads. At one point every time I updated someone removed my new total and it gets hard to keep track of. And once the table gets big the script screws up my browser. The edit thing was just another headache but Im glad to see its not actually an issue at all.

I like the spreadsheet as a theory, but the table-in-a-post has three big advantages
    1. It's right here (only one place to go)
    2. the history is preserved.
    3. we're already doing it

Yep, can't get round that one. It is possible to embed the external spreadsheet data, for example into the first post of the thread, but there is no way Ross/ Conor would add that vbulletin feature. I certainly wouldn't.
I'd see the likes of the biki being a better place for tables and could be setup more logically for showing the ART'ist records from previous years for example. Just a forum doesn't lend itself to certain types of info.

There is history on the Google Docs as well, maybe not visible to all though(?).

    Can't fix that one. ;)

Is it possible to scrape the info from the spreadsheet, and paste it into VBulletin table format? If so, the spreadsheet could be linked from the first post, user updates the spreadsheet, and a mod could edit the table every few days to display current table on the first page.

Edit: Nah, didn't think that would work...

The document owner can generate a pdf of the spreadsheet which can then be saves as an image and displayed in a post, far too much hassle though.

There are various ways of exporting the data and I've spotted some excel macros which should convert an excel spreadsheet to BBCode, but no way of doing it directly from GoogleDocs. There are plenty of ways of displaying the data external to VBulletin, but unfortunately we are stuck here.

I don't think that Google Docs can be beaten as far as the collaborative editing by loads of people in a single document goes, its just the trying to display it in here which is the tricky part.

There seem to be a couple of good ideas being thrown about here as to how to do away with tables. They seem to be getting lost though as more posts get added. What don't we have a table and if you have a good idea as to how to get rid of tables, just add it to the table by quoting the previous table (don't forget to remove the quote marks though before posting)

    :confused::confused::confused::confused:

    It's a table...just a table!

Just add your first entry or edit your previous mileage. I've added a sort to the Mileage column, so you don't even have to cut and paste anymore - the code sorts for you.

In short, find your previous entry and edit the mileage. Unbold the previous post and bold your own. Remember to delete the quote tags. Do nothing else.

If the table appears unformatted after posting, click on your *browser* refresh button and all will be well.

:o:o:o Sorry CP! I forgot to check on the table afterwards - duh!:o

The problem happened when I unbolded Broken Man. That shouldn't have affected CP, but it did.

...anyway thanks for spotting it and putting him back! :)

Note to self: Next time, check the table after posting!!
