Roller derby style

I'm hoping to start training with the local roller derby ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roller_derby ) team in the next two weeks and am an absolute loss wardrobe wise. I have nothing appropriate barr a couple of T-shirts! Has anyone any bright ideas for something really funky or seen anything around the shops that would be good to build an outfit on? It's generally some form of frilly little skirt, hot pants (not going there) fishnets and/or stripy knee highs or leg warmers and tank tops or T-shirts with lots of mix-matched patterns and bright colours.

The style is along these lines (not my usual :pac:)

My friend is a roller derby referee and I've just taken a look at his Facebook pics :D Lots of the girls are wearing sports shorts with cool patterned tights, like this with these. A little bit longer than hot pants, and the tights give good coverage.
Plain string tops are always good for a bit of colour, or you could take a scissors to some tees for an off the shoulder look, layer over the string top. Derby looks so cool and hardcore, go for an Iron Maiden tee or something :pac:
I'd probably recommend a sports bra too!
Would you link your love of vintage and the Gunne style? Some lace details on the tops or something, use softer accents say on the string top, light green, lilac.

Hello hello!! (thanks for the heads up OldGoat)

So back in 2009 I was one of the founding members of the DRG in Dublin and although I don't skate at the moment due to time issues I'm still involved with the girls.

The outfits are often dancewear meets punk gig so yeah there are lots of fisnets/shorts fishnets/skirts combos all over roller derby but one of the BEST things about it is that you get to bring your own style to it.

This is a great oppurtunity for someone with your strong sense of individual style Sapsorrow to really shine! Sew a bit of lace around the sleeves/neckline of cute tees and wear flowery tights and lacey or velvet skirts.

I used to wear skater dress layered over or under a tee and bright tights with black fishnets over them.

American Apparel have a great range of plain skater skirts and dresses in loads of colours that you could than add lace/ribbon etc to.

The main points from a practical sense are:
    • use comfy, stretchy fabrics
    • if wearing fishnets wear other tights underneath to help avoid fishnet burn!
    • don't wear expensive tights as they will get ripped - all the knee pads have velco on them
    • don't wear anything that could flow down to tangle in your wheels!

Think of your Derby Persona and work your clothes around that.

Remember that it is a sport and a contact sport at that...it's just a bit more colourful than most!!

    Any other questions....just ask!

    Hey Giddyboots.

Is there a roller derby still going in Dublin? How can you join, it looks like SO MUCH FUN! :):D

It looks so cool! My friend who's a ref is over in Florida, and his derby name is R-Jew-D-2. He's jewish and is a nerd to the max :D

Was wondering about this, but now you mentioned it too I think I may actually try and incorporate some of it somehow...

Claires Accessories do some great punky style wear. They have various tights and knee high stockings. They also do leather padded fingerless gloves which are deadly :D I have seen a few tartan mini skirts in Dunnes and Pennys over the weeks so there worth a look and TK Maxx if you have time for a good root.

Amazing! Let me know how you get on. I'd be too much of a weakling for this sort of thing but I'd love to see some shows after watching Whip It!!
