Took a loan of the father in laws sprocker on sunday, walking through a field and he just stopped and looked at me and toppled over , checked his paw and pad now sign of blood or cut or punture, carried him back to the car, got the father in law to check him aswell, we both thought he had just strained sum thing, he was eating normal sunday nite and monday morning he was at the gate wagging his tail,

brought him to the vet turns out he has a crack in his bone running lenght ways, so he,s off to see a specialist in balbriggan tommorrow, vet reckons he ll need pins,

so just wondering what insurance do the rest of you lot have, anyone reccomend the nargc insurance,

dont hold your breath re nargc and dog insurance... out hunting few yrs back springer jumped at a pheasant rising from a drain.. long story short.. dog broke leg.. took dog to vet in swords i think.. only dog man to set bones at the time anyhoo tried to claim through the insurance with nargc .. club official looked into it contacted relevant party and came back with not covered... only covered if dog does harm to livestock/property..

Due to the fact that certain "professions" in this country still appear to think they can charge "Celtic Tiger" fees, I will be getting this ASAP!!

totally agree. If the quote sounds as good as the above i will join them as i think the pup will need it, as he seems to think he invincible threw the ditches already:p

most of these companies wont insure working dogs.. i looked into it when i got the setter.. the club chairman said they refused to pay when his pointer brke his leg because he was a working dog

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,489 ✭✭✭No6

There must be somebody who insures the dog themselves!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,069 ✭✭✭ronn

    :eek::eek::eek::eek:

    Didi I read that right......

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,069 ✭✭✭ronn

    you most certainly did.
we were working it out on the very quiet drive home:D

neither of us of had insurance on any of our dogs he,s had 4 dogs and ive had 3,
So say if we had nargc insurance for 6 dogs @e100 a year and say a dog lives for 10 years thats 6k
so 1 injured dog out of 7 is costing 1k,

so still not convinced to get insurance or not.
not sure if they would even cover the dog now,

does anyone known if insurance covers the dogs yearly check/injections that can be anything from e40 to e70 a year alone,

Just on a side note, how would they know if the dog is working or not unless you tell them? Im not advising people to lie to the insurance companies  but if a dog is brought to a vets with a hurt, broken, scratched body part i dont think the vet is going to write down, " dog was out shooting and got hurt on a fence" would they? Could you not just say brought the dog for a walk and it hurt itself?

Im starting to run out of dogs my bitch springer has a nasty cut on her now, dont now how it happened, she retrived a duck on sunday early on but only noticed the cut tonight, 6 people have been out my back garden since sunday and nobody noticed,, cant be sure if she clipped it on the decking , but cant find any clumbs of fur or blood, its not a straight/clean cut looks simular to a burn, its about the with of an index finger,,
    off to the vet tommorrow,
still counting the cost of the last dog i injured 1k so far,

the vet must think im awfull with dogs,

I've been doing some maths myself.
My 18 month old dropper had a nice 1 inch rip in her ear 3 weeks ago, €210 for a few stitches (which I would have made a better job of myself).
I've never had a dog to the vet's before in 17 years and my father hasn't either in his 50+ plus years.
So is it worth it. I'm thinking no but in the back of my mind it's niggling at me that a serious operation could run into thousands.

I reckond my father is up €5K :D

Never had pet insurance but I'm going to get it for the new dog. The neighbour's labrador has had a new knee and hip (fit & healthy dog) would have been thousands but the insurance covered it all.

Seen an ad for tesco pet insurance half price tonight, I'm not sure what they cover though...

My €210 got me 4/5 stitches, the anesthetic, and 8 antibiotic tablets. Plus the stitches out in 10 days.
Plus a big lampshade for the dogs head.

You must make sure that the insurance covers a working dog or else they won't pay out.

Get a couple of these. Know a guy who used one said it was dead handy, I've just stitched them back up by hand in the past though. Keep the lampshade if you're using this method ;)

You guys need to find more reasonable vets

My black lab had complications 2 years back having pups, long story short she had to have an emergency operation to cut her open !

My vet came over, operated on her, stitched her back up, injections etc. Came back 3 days later for check up and more tablets, all for the grand total of €70 :)

Other evening I called upto her at 9 pm with another dog, turns out hes got wet excema, cleand him up, injection, spray, tablets for a week, all for €15

Don't me asking what's the name and location of the vet , would be a money saver for lads round about if something was to happen to their dog

this season is going from bad to worse, my bitch was left on her own for 2 hrs today managed to pull her stitches, found her run around the garden with the lampshade thing in her mouth. Make things worse no vets open had to go to belfield,, e176 for staples instead of stitches was expecting it to be dearer though,,
think ill be getting her insured on monday

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,069 ✭✭✭ronn

Brought my dog into my vet today for a check up as recommended by the vet hospital in belfield,

turns out the staples were put to tight together and theres puss building up under the staples, my vet has to put in a tube to let the puss drain,
    its just never ending,:mad::mad:
my poor dog doesnt know whats going on shes been whacked out of it 3 times in 6 days,

is there any come back on that 176 quid for the staples thats a joke you should send the bill to that vet that did them your not having much luck but fair play i know lads that would shoot the dog before spending money on it hope everything works out for ya

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,069 ✭✭✭ronn

Im sure theyd just say its part of the risks involved, the missus had to sign a disclaimer when she brought the dog in, no doubt she read it from top to tail:rolleyes:,
got a basket muzzel for her yesterday, she had it on for less than 10mins before she made sh1te of it,

Ah once she gets better i dont mind(not that i can afford to be spending e300 a week on vets either)
