VW Scirocco - opinions?

folks, i'd like to buy a Scirocco TDI (2010) but a lot of people on here seem to slag off the reliability of VW's.

is the Scirocco too new to tell what the reliability is like? I'd be doing about 120km per day on Motorway. I currently drive a '02 Almera and in the three years i've had it, have never had a problem even starting it.

can you share your thoughts on the wisdom of going for a VW? Also, a local dealer (midlands) is charging 31,100 for a new model, yet the RRP on VW's website states 29,595. Are there some hidden costs added onto RRP or is this dealer still living in the Celtic Tiger era?

    thanks.

I know its nice looking but 31,000 for what is essentially a Golf is WAYYYYYY too much IMO

Friend had one as a hire car in Germany, said it was a good drive, very comfortable, stylish and well built inside. But the 2.0 140bhp tdi while good on fuel, was all wrong for the car, it was all show and no go.If it had 50 or 60 bhp more it would have been been a good second hand buy, its a class looking machine when its done up a bit.For 30k it should be a 200bhp, 450nm little speedster, the Polo gti is 10k less and it would blow it off the road.

In fairness though a TDI Scirocco and a Polo GTi were intended to be different cars. One is a relatively sensible hatchback the other is a pocket rocket

I know but they went all out on the Polo Gti and gave it a good powerful engine and they are talking about putting a 170bhp diesel into it next year, Scirocco could have been great if it had a 200bhp diesel like bmw and others have in the 30k hatch back range. Its way overpriced imo

I always thought the Scirroco TDI had 170BHP no?

EDIT: According to Wiki there was a 30BHP increase (140->170) in the 2.0TDI in 2009, Id wouldnt be happy if i bought one in 2008 :P

Nice looking cars. Bare in mid it would be very impractical though, which is fine if you're not going to have passengers often or need cargo room. Think you could get something much nicer for 30k though.

    2008 Audi perhaps?

Apologies for these links if you're set on the scirocco!

cheers J77, no definitely not set on a Scirocco if there are reliability issues. I won't be carrying passengers so a coupe suits me. Nor am i too concerned with a powerful car because i've only been driving two years and recently got the full license, so still fairly cautious on the road. Economy of Scirocco does make for good reading on paper at least, and this is important.

however, no point people admiring the Scirocco's sleak lines or economy if she's on the hard shoulder with the hazard lights on.

I had assumed that reliability of VW's was the reason for them retaining their value on the second hand market, but judging by some comments in here that's not the reason VW's retain their value (by comparison).

    rgds,

Pretty shape, but needs petrol power.

I have a 2009 Scirocco 2.0TDI and I love mine. Great mpg and performance, very comfortable and no issues so far whatsoever.

IMO that whole "VW reliability" thing is old news and not really true on their newer cars.

    A Golf GTD costs €32,655.

A friend has a 1.4TSI and its quite nice.

Though, I dont know if you have a choice of the seats but whatever ones he has in it. Bloody horrible to get into. You hit the side of it and if it is leather all it will do is damage it fairly quickly. Seats are fine otherwise.

With the petrol its nice. Good pull but that 1.4TSI sounds very thin.
The 170 CR TDI would be great in that car and at some point you could remap it to about the 200 mark.

Im a tall fellow and getting into the back seats is a bit tough but that doesnt matter too much in real terms for some people like me, possibly yourself.

Very well put together. Very solid. Would imagine the Golf would be the same.

A really nice car! Im one year driving on a full license today. Would love to have a nice powerful yoke like that.

Id still consider the Golf too. More practical if you need to take loads in the boot and things. Same engine, same trim for the most part.

OisinT, have you had any issues getting the doors open in this freezing weather? there's no metal frame around the doors glass, so the window automatically drops an inch in order to unlock the door.

anyone got any ideas as to why the RRP is lower than the dealers price? is this common?

    thanks folks.

I really like the look of the Scirocco! Am seriously considering a 2nd hand one in the next year or two. I like them a lot!

On another note, that seems like pretty big depreciation for an A5? Maybe I'm wrong though :)

    Same here.

I've been looking at some 2009 models. Hoping to get one in the next couple of weeks.

Yes the RRP never includes delivery and some other charges.

The father has one and he had a bit of hassle with the windows alright. Once he had to climb across and get out of the passenger side, that said I had a Bmw coupe for a few weeks and it was the same, I wouldn't let that turn you off the car though.

I've driven the Scirocco a good bit, and it'll easily fit four tall lads comfortably (they are only a four seater). The boot looks small but it is fairly deep.

His is blue and the amount of heads it turns is unreal, drive pass a line of traffic and 90% of people will stare :L

I'd probably go for for a Seat Leon FR 2.0 TDI with 170BHP for that money!

Ive got one of those & I can assure you it is not worth €29k. 25k might be more realistic now. I paid 51.5k for mine in 08 & that was 3k off retail.

Yeah, basically I've had to pour some water around the outside to get it to open, but I had the same problem in my old e46 BMW too.

I have to also agree about the legroom in the back. It's actually a very roomy car.

When you say it's not worth it...do you mean the A5 is a letdown or that 29k is too much!?

My dreams of getting a Scirocco have been shattered. Dealer I was dealing with is an absolute tosser :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,541 ✭✭✭Leonard Hofstadter

    Try another dealer then OP!

I'm sure the Scirocco is not a bad car, but it smacks of cheapness by VW to launch it only a few months before the "Mk 6"(actually a Mk 5.5) Golf yet fit it with the older Mk 5 Golf interior.

I think it is fundamentally wrong to order a car like a Scirocco with an engine that runs on tractor juice.

Why not consider the Peugeot RC-Z?

That's meant to be the best driving Pug since their heyday in the 80s and 90s with the 205 and 306, and the interior is really smart in the RC-Z as well.

The Honda CR-Z is meant to be a sharp car to drive although it is meant to be underpowered - they are solving this by making the engine a little bigger (going up to a 1.6) and fitting it with a turbo so it will have closer to 200 bhp:D!

Had a look at both the CR-Z and RC-Z. Out of my price range unfortunately.

I think Scirocco looks like it has a big butt out of proportion to the front of the car.

I had the same problem in my car (not a Scirocco but similar set-up). My friend had the same problem in his E46 convertible, and somehow broke the window by mistake.

Running a credit card between the seal and the window works if you're in a rush, but beware that it can break the card.

I bought some silicone lubricant and sprayed a little into the seal and on the window just above it and wound the window up and down a good few times.

Edit - perhaps google "silicone lubricant for cars" if you're at work.

I might be very very wrong on this, but I thought the Scirocco was really just a stylish looking Golf, not a full on sports coupe ?
